Sorrowfully we again record the passing of a '93 man, "Charlie" French, one of our most prominent and eminently successful classmates. Regarding his death "Skid" commented in his daily column in the Concord Monitor, "Granite Chips," "The late Lieutenant Colonel Charles A. French; Laconia's able highway engineer, useful citizen, fine friend, and family man." All of us will miss this loyal Dartmouth '93 man and we extend to Mrs. French and their two daughters our sincere sympathy. George Greeley and Mrs. Greeley represented the class at the interment services at the Marlboro Cemetery. (See Necrology.)
On invitation of President Cox, your acting Secretary enjoyed a very fine luncheon at the offices of the John Hancock Life Insurance Cos. He has written each member of the class regarding the Alumni Fund and has advised you of my appointment as Class agent for this Fund. We are anxious to raise the percentage of givers of the class and to increase the total amount subscribed by the class members over last year in order that President Hopkins may know that '93 appreciates him and his work. A goodly number of men have already sent in their subscriptions and we sincerely hope those who have not will attend to this at once. Guy is looking fit as a fiddle and seems as chipper as can be.
Visited with "Skid" early in May and am happy to report that he seemed in good spirits and busy as usual. Says he received an interesting letter from "Roller" Mason who retires this year from his very active life's work as head of the Physical Welfare Department of the Schools of the City of New York.
A letter from "Bob" Boutelle indicates that he and Mrs. Boutelle are in good health and that while retired as far as business is concerned, "Bob" finds plenty in his garden and books to keep him enjoyably busy.
Woodbury is actively and happily engaged in his practice of medicine in Wakefield, Mass. and continues his considerable interest in his ancestral home at North Weare, N. H., where he and his family spend much time.
MacKay has returned from Florida to his home in Rochester and advises that he is gradually retiring so far as his law practice is concerned.
Dr. Martyn of Cuttingsville, Vermont, writes reminiscently of "Charlie" French speaking especially of the hot chess games which he played with him during college days. The "King" advises that he expects, in company with Ed Griffith to be at Hanover during Commencement Week in June. Your acting Secretary hopes to meet them and others there at that time.
