An interesting letter is at hand from Bill Sykes. He says, "Every part of our life is affected by the war. For 10 weeks we had no mail, but the mail is coming under convoy but food is scarce. No rice in the stores—the native people eat about 325 tons a day. I, however, have upland rice from my farm. The farm is a godsend in these days. I will not go hungry during the duration. I am in good health but a little tired of children. This may be my last year in a public job."
