NINETEEN HUNDRED AND TWELVE'S Thirtieth Reunion is over but, for those of us who were lucky enough to be in Hanover for that big event, its memories will long endure.
Connie Snow, that secretary of class secretaries, was unable to leave his war work in Washington and attend reunion. It has therefore become necessary for the under- signed to attempt to act as his substitute (a tough job) in writing our reunion report.
From the time "Quechee" French, Mrs. French and Les Snow, first comers, were seen in Hanover Thursday evening May 14th to Sunday afternoon after the class picnic at the Outing Club, a great and growing feeling of cordiality and union was steadily solidifying the class into one large happy family. The class spirit reached new heights. Many circumstances helped to bring this about. First, it was a war-time reunion under the speed-up plan of the College and all realized the stern tests our country and our Dartmouth were facing. Secondly, those present keenly appreciated what a privilege it was to be back in Hanover again to enjoy and revive again those memories of thirty years ago. Lastly and especially helpful was the way Doc O'Connor handled the class dinner and class meeting. Every member of the class was called upon and required to say a few words. Each one reported on those classmates from his neck of the woods who were not present at reunion and also told about their own families and the achievements of each member of their respective families. It is impossible here to piece together the whole story of that evening but it is our earnest hope that those present will communicate immediately with those classmates not fortunate enough to attend reunion and let them know all the interesting remarks, information and sidelights of that affair and of those three great days in Hanover.
The following members of the class and families were present: Adams, B. F.; Allen, H. E. and Mrs. Allen; Baker, R. E.; Boylan, S. J. and Mrs. Boylan; Buell, A. C.; Bullard, G. P.; Burnham, A. The class was also greatly honored and pleased to have Mrs. Walter B. Biery, Mrs. Fred Day and Mrs. Mauritz Hedlund attend reunion and we hope to see them again at many more reunions of the class.
The events o£ the reunion week-end were as follows: l. Friday evening—May 15—The Reception of President Hopkins to alumni followed by the alumni dance in Thayer Hall.
2. Saturday—May 16—At noon—Luncheon for the alumni in Thayer Hall followed by the meeting of the General Alumni Association. Doc O'Connor as President of the Alumni Association presided at this meeting and introduced President Hopkins as the principal speaker. Those present will not soon forget "Hoppie's" speech at this meeting.
3- Saturday—At 3 P.M.—Class picture followed by the baseball game between Dartmouth and Holy Cross.
4. Saturday evening—Class Dinner and Class Meeting in the Hovey Grill in Thayer Hall. This dinner and meeting has been heretofore mentioned in this report. At the class meeting Doc O'Connor called for the report of the Nominating Committee. Henry Viets, as Chairman of this Committee, consisting also of Walter Elcock. Jimmie Steen, Walter French and Stan Weld, placed in nomination the following to act as the Executive Committee of the Class for the next five years: Basil O'Connor, Chairman; Connie Snow, Secretary; Dick Plummer, Treasurer; Ray Cabot; Dick Remsen; Bill Shapleigh. These men were duly elected with Les Snow acting as Temporary Chairman of the meeting. After much discussion Jimmie Steen was elected as cheer leader.
At the end of the class meeting Doc O'Connor read the list of twelve men who had died since our last reunion.
They are: Arthur T. Cobb, 1/22/42; Horace A. Colburn, 6/10/39; Lowell B. Dana, 12/6/37; Mauritz Hedlund, 7/6/40; John E. Hunt, 11/5/39; Wm. C. Timbrell, 11/15/41; Malcolm Jones, 11/14/40; Russell Palmer, 8/8/40; Willard L. Rust, 4/10/42; Arthur C. Smith, 5/30/39; Richard P. Whitman, 2/7/39; Willard L. Wright, 8/18/37.
Doc O'Connor, in his closing remarks, paid tribute to these classmates who have completed their span of years with us and told us how these departed classmates would want us to carry on.
The class meeting was thereupon duly adjourned for another five years.
5. Sunday noon—Class picnic at the Outing Club. This was the final event and greatly enjoyed by all, and so came to an end one of the greatest reunions of the Class of 1912.
To those men who could not attend, we send greetings and all good wishes. We will see you at the 35th reunion. We were thinking about and talking about you these three days in Hanover. We appreciated your telegrams and letters.
This report would not be complete with- out mentioning that on May 10th last- Commencement Day in Hanover this year —the following sons of 1912 men received their degrees from Dartmouth College:
Walter B. Elcock, Jr., son of "Jogger" Elcock; James S. Erwin, son of Jim Erwin; Ralph E. Farnum, son of Husky Farnum; Richard Remsen Jr., son of Dick Remsen; Douglas Stowell, son of Ernie Stowell; Guy A. Swenson Jr., son of Guy Swenson; John T. Worcester, son of Doc Worcester.
It was a great thrill to the fathers of these boys to be present and see President Hopkins hand them their sheepskins.
And now finally to "Boss" Geller, the class wishes to express its heartfelt thanks for his great work as Class Agent. His job is so important to Dartmouth in these times of financial stress. Dartmouth will go on, will survive these troubled times and with Boss as Class Agent, our class will do its part. We also must express to Boss as Chairman of the Reunion Committee, Babe Hartshorn, Ray Cabot and Doc O'Connor, our appreciation for making our 30th reunion the best reunion of all.
