While some of our brethren have been leaving service at the College, classmate Vail Haak is pleased that he now has his son working for the Hood Museum as assistant registrar.

We obtain news sometimes from members of other classes, and as such found out that on Sunday, September 23, BobMac Arthur, playing with his son and Ray McMahon '43, scored a hole-in-one at Wannamoisett Country Club. Champagne flowed in lieu of beer to celebrate his first eagle.

Our class, some 50-plus strong, assembled for the mini-reunion October 12-14 in Hanover. In future columns I'll report on our class meeting, list who attended, and update you on many of the classmates' doings. But I decided that for this column it was appropriate to report first on the recipient of the Pick Axe Award for 1990. On the occasion of the class dinner in the Wheelock Room on Saturday evening, our class President Vail Haak read the following resolution to those assembled:

"With deep sadness we meet on this occasion that was long a favorite of our classmate, Ken McClain. His death last May ended a life of high professional achievement and a life fall of good and generous deeds and many good times.

"We remember Ken as a genial, enthusiastic host—generous of spirit and substance—as many people from all stations in life discovered.

"Not long after graduation, Ken became a reknowned geologist famous for locating gas and oil. When he failed at times to discover energy, he supplied his own.

Ken liked to travel and drop the good name of his college on others, especially young people he wanted to attend Dartmoutn-many of them took his good advice.

"Perhaps our most treasured impression of Ken will always be his contagious optimism. After a couple of typically delightful hours in his company we were all converted.

"Therefore, tnis is surely the appropriate moment for our class to announce with pride that its gold Pick Axe Award for 1990 is bestowed on our very special friend, Kenneth Myatt McClain. The appropriate citation will be presented on the occasion of a campus tree planting in his honor in the spring of 1991. Suffice it to say at this moment in time that we were all proud to be his classmate at his beloved College."
