"Esquire" Features MacLeod
August 1943

THE HEROISM AT Guadalcanal of Bob MacLeod '39, former Dartmouth All- American who became a flying Marine, is the subject of a short feature, "Odious Japs Meet All-American," which Mark Cox has written for the August Esquire.

With a squadron of four, MacLeod dived to attack 16 Zeros and downed at least two of them himself as he tried to draw them into the flak of his own ground forces. In this endeavor he was almost shot down by his own men.

With at least four Jap planes to his credit, MacLeod came off the "Canal" without damage in the air, but an injury suffered in a jeep accident closed his fighting days for a while. After enduring a lot of bombing in the hospital beside the flying field, he finally was brought home and recuperated in Florida at the home of Jess Hawley, former Dartmouth football coach. In recent months he has been serving as a flying instructor at Pensacola.
