I have the honor to report to the class of '95 that I am A.W.O.L.
At the moment of writing I am seated in the well-lighted library of Guilford College enjoying the friendly hospitality of the librarian and staff. I'm sure it may be said of Guilford College, situated in the village of Guilford College, North Carolina, a few miles from Greensboro Basic Training Center No. 10, that it does not remind one of Dartmouth except that it is a small college and there are those who love it. This applies, as to smallness and loving, to the Dartmouth of our day.
The college was founded by Quakers in 1837 and is still a Quaker institution. It is beautifully situated and suggests a peaceful world. There are no military uniforms to be seen on the campus. There are no military trainees, male or female, to be seen either at the college or in the village.
There are a few Japanese-American girls matriculated here and enough stalwart youth, evidently, to populate the athletic field, a small one, for baseball, etc.
Since I have been here I have heard from A. J. Crosby. He didn't sign his name, but I'm sure the envelope was addressed by him. He also wrote something on the enclosed sheet of paper. This is what he wrote:—"For The Reunionist." There was another enclosure; and as money talks there was considerable talk from the said enclosure. I know A. J. well enough to believe that a letter from any '95 man, or all of them, would be genuinely appreciated by classmate Crosby. His address is 32 Bull Street, Newport, R. I. I have also heard from Austin and Fred Cleveland.
If my superiors in '95 feel that I should be reprimanded or demoted, here I am. I'm willing to plead guilty. But in mitigation, let me say that Mrs. Stevens and I have not seen Dr. Roland Jr. more than six days in the past two years. Furthermore he has a small daughter, his third child, whom we never had seen.
Still furthermore, Capt. Roland Jr. is likely to go overseas, most any time, or he may remain at the Station Hospital B. T. C. No. to, Greensboro, North Carolina, for weeks or months. So if I'm to be reprimanded (I already have been by telegrams and letters), send official papers to be served on me to Capt. Roland E. Stevens Jr. M. C. Station Hospital B. T. C. No. 10, Greensboro, North Carolina.
I'm leaving now for Greensboro. The Reunionist is likely to appear a bit late in the month.
