Over on Chase Field, Coach Tom Dent has been carrying on his activities with his customary finesse and gusto and has also had an outstanding season for himself and his fighting charges. The current aggregation is, he believes, one of the best that Dartmouth has ever fielded. Led by big Al Bildner who has been high scorer for the season to date, Dartmouth has what amounts to an all-star aggregation. With Dan Carroll at goal, Lee Fancher at fullback, Jack Daniels at centerhalf, Bobby Craig at right half, Bobby Merriam at inside right, Jim Osborne at outside right, and Jim and George Pert at inside and outside left respectively, Coach Dent has four former Dartmouth captains and several All-Americans on his talented roster.
The season has been marked by wins over Massachusetts State (5-0), Tufts (6-0), Harvard (3-0), Yale (5-2), and RPI (3-0). The only loss was a close one which the boys dropped to the Army by the score of 3-1, which would seem to indicate, among other things, that the Cadets have a Davis and Blanchard in practically every known form of athletic endeavor. The record of five wins against the solitary Army defeat was compiled with Dartmouth amassing a total of 23 goals against 5 for the combined opposition, of which 3 were the winning total of the Army. This remarkable average speaks volumes for the defense, especially for goalie Danny Carroll who holds the fort in front of the net while the enemy kick things at him. The 23 markers were made as follows: Bildner 8, Merriam 6, Osborne 3, Ivins 2, Daniels 2, G. Pert 1, and Pounds 1. The RPI game was played under floodlights at Troy the weekend of November 9 and the boys reported that the field was almost as dark as a fraternity house game room at house parties. Groping about in the darkness, the Green managed to boot three into the net to give them a margin of victory in this bizarre encounter.
As a final note of triumph for what should be an outstanding season with games with MIT (won by the Green, 7-0) and Colgate still outstanding Coach Dent is taking six of his ablest operatives (Bildner, Merriam, Osborne, Craig, Fancher, and Carroll) to New York early in December to play in an All-Star game between the North and the South. Coach Dent will coach the Yankee team against the boys from south of the border and Dartmouth, with six of its men in the talent-studded ensemble, will be fully represented. We wish Tom and his boys success in this version of the War Between the States.
SOCCER CAPTAIN and leading scorer, Al Bildner led his teammates through the best season in recent years, losing only to Army, 3-1.
