The women's basketball team continued to roll along to a possible second straight Ivy League title, but the men's team hit the skids after its best start in years. "We're right on target," says women's coach Chris Wielgus, whose team had posted a 12-5 record at the beginning of February. Leading the Big Green were junior Gail Koziara with 21.7 points and 15.5 rebounds per game, sophomore Ann Deacon with 13.3 points a game, and freshman Cindy Vaios with 12.1 points per game. "I was surprised by Cindy," says Wielgus. "She's from Manchester, New Hampshire, which is not a basketball-rich area. But she's earned herself a starting position on the team. I knew she was good but didn't think she'd be able to contribute so quickly." The team's goal is to repeat as the Ivy League champion.
The men's basketball team won eight of its first nine games and in the process became the first Ivy League team in history to win two tournaments during a season. But then hard times fell on the Green squad and the team lost its next six games. "I thought we'd be improved this season," says coach Tim Cohane, "and we caught some people by surprise early. Now we're going to have to struggle for every win, and our goal is to have a .500 season. I do think we've made some progress toward our ultimate goal to be a contender again." Senior forward Larry Lawrence continued to pace the Big Green offense, scoring 22 points per game.
