Extra! Extra! Big Raid on Outing ClubTwenty-nine members of the Class of '97 served with a summons for immediate appearance at the "Hoosegow" in Hanover to answer before the Inferior Judge of the Inlerior Court of Grafton County! Pictures of the raid were furnished by the Rogue's Gallery. The charges brought against these celebrating classmates were for illegal acts committed in Grafton County in the years 1893 to 1897 or some at later date. Old records which had been carefully preserved, some interesting contemporary poetry, part of it handed down from person to person, helped the Sheriff in his detective work. Charges against various classmates are listed herewith:
Chase, selling damaging pictures to blackmail honest men; Tuttle, aiding in stealing a hearse and keeping rear off wheel nut; Holt, dispensing of large quantity of stolen ice cream with unsanitary equipment, to witone shoe horn and one soap dish; Smith, personal assault on one Carter from hide-out in State Highway Culvert; Ryan aiding Smith and others to clothe Carter in dress of the other sex; also attempt to steal turkeys from citizens of Norwich, Conn.; Lull, unwarranted use of railroad master car to fish in Oregon, concealing illegal catch far over State limit, also catch of illegal number of trout in Vermont. Ward, theft of drugs, elopement with druggist's daughter, hidden interest in nefarious business known as Ward & Baird; Ham, violation of copyright law, publishing song entitled "Grafton County Jail"; also, aiding in tying up Carter and dressing him in costume of other sex.
Morse, mixing tobacco and rubber and falsely calling it half-and-half, injuring health of others by smoking the same, also flim-flamming Boston & Maine R. R. by use of tickets sold to Morse's Father; Watson stealing fuel from Dartmouth College for his own personal use and comfort; Tracy, hill church irregularities, various and sundry; Gibson, treason, use of phony pictures of Molotov and other acts that interfere with the proper functioning of the United Nations; Christophe, card shark "notorious," also using marked cards; Foss, using mirrors in a card game; Rollins, flim-flamming Boston & Maine R. R. and bringing various charges about reasonable transportation expense of skis from Portland to Hanover, also organizing an illegal ski trust, violation of Inter-state Commerce regulations; Temple, assault and personal injury to a classmate with a heavy shoe.
Carr, picture' not shown, finger prints available, charged with phony sale of furniture and disguising himself with false hair; Sibley, picture not shown, finger prints only clue, charged with Ku Klux Klan atrocities, also personal attack on Row, Johnnie, Row, also promulgating and singing malicious song about Eric, The Red, to the tune of "Grafton County Jail"; Rowe, unlawful requirement of underclassmen to eat hot oysters when goat chitlins were advertised by the" Delta Alpha Bedbug Alley branch of Ku Klux Klan; Noyes, charged with collusion with various and sundry culprits at various and sundry times; Henderson, theft of fuel and damage to the reputation of the College by calling Dartmouth Hall—Bedbug Alley; Appleton, theft of coal and wood for personal use, also membership in and acts of violence while a member of the Ku Klux Klan Delta Alpha Branch; Balch, illegal shooting of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), also stealing coal to heat a fraternity house known as "Alpha Delt."
McFee, violation of copyright laws, publishing and distributing songs by various and sundry authors; Brown, stealing wood for personal use, also running unlicensed hand laundry; "Gov" Tent, use of false title "Gov," using it in connection with transportation of alcoholic beverages at various and sundry times; Johnson, theft of coal and wood from the college to heat his own room using alias, Y. A. S. S. Johnson; Drew, singing off key and often a song maligning Amherst college; Kelly, theft of numerous and sundry items of merchandise and garments while touring for football games, by means of which he is said to have acquired a full football suit for use in college games; Pender, underworld activities and atrocities in collusion with other members of T. N. E.; Bolser, stealing flasks from chemical lab making Turkish water pipes and selling same for profit.
