"Freshmen—V p"

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA'S contribution to the Class of 1951 are on their way! John Bransten from Menlo School; Herman Christensen Jr., Edward Golden, Peter Tennyson and Edward Eichler from San Mateo High School; John Hatfield, Richard Schneider and Robert Tomfohrde from Berkeley High; William Miller from Palo Alto High, and Charles Parr from Piedmont High. Most of these boys attended our annual dinner at the Hotel Bellevue in San Francisco last May. The Dads who came along to the party were called upon by Alumni Councilor Bill Washburn 'l4 to respond for their sons. Interesting how the California, Harvard and Illinois alumni react when their sons enter Dartmouth; sincerely appreciative but not with quite the same accent as found in the response from TommyTomfohrde 'l5: "At last the family prayers are answered."

At the spring meeting, the new class received some good, friendly advice, from Walter Hayt '78, who always comes from Sacramento for important functions (the way Walter looks now he will be attending his 70th reunion in Hanover next June).

The new freshmen will find an old Pacific Coast friend in Hanover—Bob Monahan '29, who left our association and his duties with the United States Forest Service at the end of June to accept an appointment as Graduate Manager of the Outing Club and College Forester. They will remember Bob for his inspiring talk to them on what Dartmouth means to him—most constructive.

Officers of the Club

Officers elected for the new year are: President, B. C. McCullough '3l; Vice President, Jack Baer 'l7: Secretary-Treasurer, B. L. Winslow '20; Assistant Secretary, Bill Danforth '41. As a carry-over from the retiring President Deane Howland '34 administration, a Sunday picnic developed June 8, at Searsville Lake, near Palo Alto, after three days of solid rain.

Co-chairmen Mort Crowell '29 and BobMonahan '29 can take full credit for getting the gang out as shown in the accompanying picture.

First to show up was Charlie Cusack '43 and Mrs. Cusack from the greatest distance, Sacramento, next Vice President Jack Baer 'l7 and "Mama" Baer, John Bowles '38, Mrs. Bowles and their two little blonde "saucers"—now let's get serious, also in the picture are Ray Taylor'11, "Nick" Carter '41, Bob White '41, ArthurHislop '37 and their wives—"Jock" Francine '37. Jock and Mrs. Guenther '4l and son, Peteand Mrs. Talbot '3B and daughter, Mrs. DesMarais with son Hubert and daughters Connie and Marianne representing "Gob" '26, "Mart" and Mrs. Crowell '29 with brother Bill and mother, Mrs. Mort Crowell Sr. ('01), Mrs.Ray Collerd 'l7, holding a seat for Photographer Ray, who just couldn't be in two places at once. Also camera shy were Bob and Mrs.Monahan '29 and their three children, Billand Mrs. Mudgett '18 and daughter, Pete Tennyson '5l and his "date" who left before the picture was taken.

Miss Charlotte E. Ford, Alumni Recorder and Alumni Editor of the MAGAZINE, was guest of honor at a special luncheon of the Alumni Association of Northern California July it. St. Julian's was the site of the San Francisco gathering in honor of Miss Ford, who was attending a National Conference in the City of 300 members of the American Alumni Council. Miss Ford took her audience inside Dartmouth College, especially in the complex and important functioning of the Alumni Records Department. Her straightforward, sincere comments inspired enthusiasm in the minds of all those who attended that she is tops for her big job of keeping track of Dartmouth's far-flung alumni.

The following were present at the luncheon: Ayers, A. H. '06, Baer, J. V. Jr. '17, Ball, B. F. '31, Bowles, J. D. Jr. '38, Campbell, V. C. '12, Cohen, A. J. Jr. '37, Collerd, R. B. '17, Dostal, P. L. AT DARTMOUTH FAMILY PICNIC: Dartmouth men living in northern California and Nevada braved the possibility of rain June 8 to bring their families together for a picnic at Searsville Lake, California.
