This column becomes more and more like the Bureau of Missing Persons' Annual Report, but it has seemed to me that probably some members o£ the class have become rather tired reading about certain familiar people who, because of their activities and good reporting by their friends, appear very frequently in this space. Therefore it is the policy of this correspondent to give first priority to "lost" members of the class each month.
Samuel Simons, who dropped into limboright from the beginning, writes: "Sorry that I've been so neglectful.... attribute it to nothing save just one of those things .... or maybe laziness. At any rate, here's a brief summary of my doings since graduation. ....
"Entered the wholesale hardware business upon graduation and, except for two years in the Navy where I fought the tough battle of the Supply Depot in Oakland, Calif., have remained here (Marblehead, Mass.) right to the present time. Married, had a sweet li'l girl in California (Harriet Gay Simons, age 4), a boy (Daniel Jay Simons) just a few weeks ago. Moved from the city to Marblehead where we hole up in the winter but have a grand time the rest of the year. Took to a little sailing, still play a lousy game of golf, get to the gym less and less often, am beginning to get weighty in the middle. Went skiing last winter for the first time in years and now realize that it's been an awfully long time since I went to college."
Simons is President of Simons Hardware Cos. of Boston, which position he has held since 1942.
And now from Joe Stein comes word that he is in practice as an architect in Waterbury, Conn. Joe got his Bachelor bf Architecture at Harvard in 1941, served as a First Lieutenant in the Engineers in the ETO during the war, where he received the Purple Heart and a citation for the Rhine Crossing, and then returned to work as an architect for various New York firms from 1945 to 1948 and now is on his own as aforesaid in Waterbury. He is married and has one daughter, born on the 20th of June, 1948.
Harold (Shorty) Pabst, of whom I had heard nothing since approaching him delicately on the subject of beer for our post-war eighth reunion, reports himself well along in the natal sweepstakes with four children, three boys and one girl. He is owner of the Bar Fork Ranch in Carbondale, Colo., an enterprise devoted, as he says, "to children, cattle, sheep, and four dogs." He is active in the Boy Scouts and is a member of the board of trustees of the Glenwood Springs Clinic.
James C. Jones 111, of the firm of Jones, Hocker, Gladney and Grand, attorneys at law of St. Louis, received his LL.B. from Washington University (St. Louis), served in the Army in the Antilles Department during the late unpleasantness, and is now obviously back practicing law. He is a member of the Missouri Historical Society, the Zoological Society of St. Louis, Chairman of the State of Missouri JBC (whatever that is), ABA, and secretary of the St. Louis Dartmouth Alumni Association.
Bud (Ben Ames Jr.) Williams achieved the greatest newspaper note of the month by his election as an assistant vice president of the First National Bank of Boston. Bud is also treasurer of the Bouve-Boston School of Physical Education. He lives in Jamaica Plain.
To continue the news of 1938's more prolific members, Earl Ward reported to me in Hanover, while I was shopping for a pair of fleece-lined slippers for my spouse, that he is now the proud father of daughter No. 4, Deborah Ward. Bud Hanley didn't give me any total, but he is the father of a boy, John Charles Hanley, on October 21.
Dr. Paul I. Ossen of Quincy, Mass.: "The most exciting part of the November issue, however, goes to the picture of the Worcester group, in which one Fran Reilly stands unashamed. I am glad to see that he, at least, has less hair than yours truly." Paul is on his own in the practice of medicine after spending several years in the army.
To be placed on some sort of Roll of Honor because of the valuable time they have given up to the College as interviewers of prospective freshmen go the following names: WaltAverill, Herb Bayer, Al Bliss, Tom Boyan,Jim Cooney, Frank Davenport, Joe Fogarty,Dick Gilbert, Pat Gorman, Phil Jacob, GeorgeKingsbury, Whitey Mays, Bob Stearns, and Boit Wiswall.
Juan J ova, Second Secretary of Legation and Vice Consul in Tangier, Morocco, reports that he joined the Foreign Service in April of 1947: "was sent to Basra, Iraq as vice-consul. From September 1 until June 24, 1949 I was acting consul there and in charge of the post. On February 9, 1949, I married Pamela Johnson, an English girl, daughter of Col. G. T. Johnson OBE. We were home on leave during the months of September and October."
Speaking of being home on leave, my wife and I spent a very pleasant evening in Hanover with Stan Brown, who is working in the Canal Zone (Balboa to be exact). He likes the life down- there and keeps quite busy both in a business and social way. As reported earlier, he is the father of a daughter which looks very much like him, according to report.
Charley Newman is Safety Director of the Hyatt Bearings Division of General Motors in Rahway, N. J., a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and Vice-President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Orange. He has one two-year-old boy. DaveBerliner is a Junior Executive with the Mack Shirt Co. in Cincinnati, married, has one daughter. John Nelson is a Public Accountant with Nathaniel Bigelow Jr. company, is married and has one daughter two and a half years old. "Bumped into Torn Roberts on the street in Concord the other day, apparently doing a rushing business for Eastman Kodak. I'm actually living in Goffstown."
To correct a slip appearing in the last notes, Bob Jones' new station in Tulsa is KRMG, of which he is general manager.
