MEN OF DARTMOUTH IN WESTERN NEW YORK gave "a rouse for the College on the hill" during the recent holiday season. The reason—Buffalo's first Inter-Collegiate Hockey Circus. The sponsors—the Dartmouth Club of Western New York, and the alumni associations of Williams, Princeton, Colgate and Clarkson.
To aid college teams in financing a Christmas vacation training period for the improvement of the college game; to provide hockey enthusiasts and college alumni in Buffalo with an opportunity to see leading teams and players in action and to strengthen the national recognition of Buffalo as a hockey center and increase interest in the game among young players, the local alumni groups staged a round-robin hockey series for the squads of the five schools. The squads were quartered, and training tables provided, at the Buffalo Canoe Club in Canada and nearby Canadian rinks were utilized for practice sessions. The games consisted of doubleheaders at Buffalo's beautiful Memorial Auditorium on December 29, December 31, and January 4, and a single encounter at the Nichols School rink on January 1, 1948.
Although deprived of the services of Capt. Bill Riley because of illness, the Dartmouth team covered itself with glory, and justified the pre-series bragging of the local "loyal sons." The proud parents of Bill Taylor '50, Bill Dann '50 and Lud Truscott '50 watched an all-Buffalo Dartmouth line aid in a clean sweep of the series. The final scores were as follows:
Dartmouth 7 Williams 1 Dartmouth 6 Colgate 2 Dartmouth 5 Princeton 1 Dartmouth 2 Clarkson 1
Hugh Johnson '3O acted as co-chairman of the committee of alumni of the sponsoring schools; Ed Felt '18 was chairman of the ticket committee and Paul Venneman '26 handled the financial details. The series was enjoyed by all local alumni and the Inter-Collegiate Hockey Circus bids fair to become an annual institution.
Following the afternoon double-header on January 4, the Dartmouth alumni and the Dartmouth squad attended a buffet supper at the Hotel Buffalo. Present, among others who made the trip up from Rochester for the day, were Bob Paterson '36, president of the Rochester Club, Fritz Lawson '26 and PaulGuibord '36.
The local group is now looking forward to the annual dinner on February 7, at the Hotel Statler. A large group of alumni and their wives will be on hand to hear John Sloan Dickey, President of the College, who will be our guest of honor.
