Yoohoo all you fortunate fellows who live somewhere south of Atlanta, Georgia. It's us waving at you from behind that big bank of snow. We expect to get out in time for the 25th Reunion, but can't be sure of it. This column used to emanate from "Headacres," Chestnut Hill, but on account of all the snow shovelling it's now "Backacres."
Wednesday evening, February 4 (another snowy night) saw the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston. '27 did very well that evening. Charlie Bartlett was elected president of the Association for the next year, much to the pleasure of the many hardy '27 men who came out to the dinner. They included Henry Hale, DickBradley Fox, Jay Willing, Bill Prescott, ChuckBurwell, Hal Low, Rog Salinger, AndyRankin, Bob Page, Bob Hazelton, Neal Dowe,Joe Kelly, Bill Auer, Meek Slotnik, LarryScammon, Tom Anglem, Bob Williamson, BillMacaulay, Bert Gustin, Hale Ham, ShortyOliver, Phil Fowler and your scribe, who was elected to one of the three vice presidencies of the Association. The above gang gathered for the usual preliminaries and had a very pleasant party before the dinner. Dr. Kelly up from Orleans on Cape Cod, Chuck Burwell down from Portland, Maine and Bob Hazelton down from Chester, N. H., shared honors for long distance travelling on what turned out to be a lousy night for driving.
Bert Gustin informed us that the Dartmouth Club of Lexington is sponsoring a concert by the Dartmouth Glee Club to be held in Lexington on March 12. You still may have time to get a ticket if you call him promptly.
Once again we scoop Scooper Cummings. This time a little unfairly because he wouldn't print this item in the Speakeasy anyway. However, through devious methods we obtained a copy of Koppers News for December '47 and January '4B. This very interesting publication carries not one but two items regarding a recent promotion given to H. B. Cummings. We like the second one best because it carries an excellent picture of the old so-and-so and so we quote:
"Appointed to new positions in the reorganization of the Tar Products Division in October were H. B. Cummings, R. C. Stromquist, W. L. Williams, Jr., R. R. Holmes, and J. C. Macon, Jr.
"H. B. Cummings is manager of the Planning and Procurement Department, in Pittsburgh. This is one of the three departments into which the operating activities of the division have been divided. The Planning and Procurement Department is responsible for the preparation of plans which integrate the purchase and movement of raw material, production schedules, and sales requirements and distribution. The department will also be responsible for the procurement of basic raw materials.
"Cummings joined Koppers Company in 1934. He was associated with the Boston Consolidated Gas Company, a part of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates, and from 1942 to 1946 with the Finance and Budget Department. In 1946 he became affiliated with Wailes Dove-Hermiston, at that time a Koppers subsidiary. "Cummings, who was born in Woburn, Mass., is a graduate of Dartmouth College, class of 1927, and also attended the Boston University Graduate College of Business Administration."
Not long ago he waited in Boston until about ten minutes before his train was leaving to call us up and report that he was on his way to Nova Scotia on business. If there is any tar up in that country it must be under about 40 feet of snow, so we hope he had a steam shovel with him.
As well as '27 seems to have done in the Boston Alumni Association, they are quite outdone by the '27 influence in the Dartmouth Long Island Alumni Association. SidVoice, who is one of our better reporters and who should have been given credit for taking and supplying some of the pictures of reunion which appeared in recent issues, reports that the new slate for that Association includes John Shaw, president, Sid Voice, second vice president, Gene Sullivan, assistant treasurer. Guy Bostwick (treasurer up to last year), ArtKelehar and John Roe are on the executive committee and Rudy Preuss (ex-presidentonce-removed) is an honorary member of the executive committee. According to Sid's figures that makes seven out of 21 officers, which looks like batting for .333 to us. This worthy and active association is planning to sponsor a concert by the Dartmouth Glee Club during the College spring vacation at the Garden City High School in Garden City, Long Island. It is hoped that Alumni from Westchester, Northern New Jersey and Manhattan will wish to attend.
Having felt for the past six months that we were probably the oldest living father of a still be-diapered baby, it was with double pleasure that we received a card from Al and Laura House announcing the arrival of Richard Carleton, born January 3, 1948, in Washington, D. C.
We recently had a very delightful visit with Frank Cloran, who was in Boston for a few days. Frank is looking and feeling one hundred per cent better and is now making plans to enter the general insurance business down in North Carolina or Virginia. Frank was up in Boston finishing up some work he has been doing for his former employer, The Liberty Mutual, while he was recuperating. It was wonderful to see him looking and feeling so well.
Did you notice that a recent issue of the Satevepost carried a most entertaining and well-written short story by Jay Wilson? If you missed it, look it up and read it, you'll enjoy it. January 31 issue, we think.
We got a great kick out of the last issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and hope you did too. That parenthetical business (116% of objective) looked mighty good, and the fine long list under it should make us proud. In his picture, George Howell, your Class Agent, looks a little worried. Let's make his picture next year have a great big grin by adding a much longer list of names. Had a letter from George the other day informing us that his organization for the fund this year is well under way. He also reports that the Chicago Alumni dinner on Friday, February 6, was well attended by '27 men who included Ken Anderson, Bill Abbott, BobBliss, down from Janesville, Wisconsin, SiMorand, Bob Gilboy, Carroll Daley, HarveyJones and Bob Tobey.
Jerry Allis has recently moved to Florida, his address is Box 812, Fruitland Park, Fla.
Ted Selig is now working in New Castle, Delaware, with the Richmond Radiator Company.
Happy Easter, and don't forget to send us a card.
ED. NOTE: Doane Arnold, 1957 class secretary, has recently been promoted to Assistant Secretary of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Cos. He has been with the company since 1930 and in 1941 was named manager of the underwriting department. Doane at present is also a member of the executive council of the Home Office Life Underwriters Association.
1926 SONS AT DARTMOUTH: Shown on the steps of Robinson Hall are these sons of 1926 men. Left to right, they are: front row, Andrew M. Drury '51, Francis R. Drury Jr. '48, Harry A. Hall III 50; second row, David S. Hall '51, Charles V. Fryer '51, Bennett H. Shaver '50; third row, Hillman Fallon Jr. 51, Charles Collins Jr. '51, and Kingsland Oakes '50.
A TRUE DARTMOUTH WELCOME HERE: Charles L. Hardy '27 really lets his Dartmouth friends know they're on the right track whenever they come to call on him at his home in Philadelphia. Being in the steel business, he had this steel sign made from a photograph of the Library weather vane.
