For '27 this year it's "April in New York" rather than "April in Paris" turn de dum dum. So show Don McCall's letter re the big event to the little woman and make lots of character by saying "of course" when she sings, "take me along" - more - turn de dumdum!!!!
Spring will be here - sth Avenue windows will be resplendent, theaters, art museums, Lincoln Center operating full blast, and to prove that all is not inflation, you can have a beautiful boat trip through beautiful downtown New York (harbor) to Staten Island for 5¢-that's right 5¢! And to top off this great trip to Fun City - meet your classmates at the Dartmouth Club around fivish on April 9 for the preprandial ceremonies to be followed by dinner and '27's honoring of "the man who" served as its secretary for the first 25 years - Doane Arnold.
I was all prepared to write you a non-news letter telling you of all of those classmates I hadn't heard from, and then opened the file and found I had mentally done '27 a great injustice for it produced the following:
Talked to Don McCall and heard from Howie Mullin and they have ideas up their respective sleeves to make this April '27 dinner a great one.
Retirement news of the month. KroggieKrogstad sends a nice long letter to the International Harvester Organization from their executive vice president announcing the retirement of Bill Sprague after 41 years of outstanding service to his company. It states that Bill and his wife will continue to live in Chicago.
Fred Cort also has retired from Curtiss Wright Corp. and he is now living at Jensen Beach, Fla. While Ed Jacob was scooting through Connecticut the other night he gave me a call. Wouldn't predict when he was going to slow down says if he can conclude the sale of his fish packing business it would help. He and Dottie off to Hollywood, Fla., in an Airstream where they will spend the winter.
Change of address from Hanover looks like Gordon Hope may have retired also - since new address is 15546 Redington Drive, St. Petersburg 33708. Art Keleher - please check and advise.
Following is quoted with a request to Howie to take a bow. "Your alumni organization is magnificent. Thanks for the birthday greetings. It might be of interest for any of our M.D.'s to hear that the Boston Orthopedic Club did me the honor this year of electing me their president" - Allan J.Stinchfield. Congratulations, Allan - now you take a bow.
From '27 in Vermont Hank Murray "Happy to have Bob Stevens as a new near neighbor along with Sam Wormser. Any other '27'ers who are looking for a story book village in which to live are welcome to join us in Dorset, Vt. Just back from many months in England." Hank - if I sent you a little bit bigger piece of paper would you give a little about England? What was it this time - the story of the Magna Carta or "Stonehenge and this year's calendar"? What I couldn't use here I'm sure would be welcomed by Bill North for a future Speak-easy.
Another nice note - incidentally, this chore is fun when I can get you guys to write it for me - but Monty Cavis says, "My dear sir Roger de Bury - Thank you much for the kind wishes and I render you much more heartfelt thanks that you did not mention which anniversary I will be celebrating within a few days. My son Gordon is in the class of '71 at the University of North Carolina." Monty - any '27'er who has a sophomore college son should brag loud and lustily by numbering his anniversary.
From '27 in Florida - courtesy Mac MacDonald to Gus "No special news - had a Dartmouth alumni meeting in November and four '27'ers were present. Dick Fox, ArtKeleher, Russ Weston, and myself. Trying to get a picture which was taken, which I will send in. We still enjoy Florida although last summer it was very hot. But there are other advantages. I still work at the church including the paying of bills and especially trying to get enough together to prevent overdrafts." Mac - the problem is not unique.
And from Texas, Charlie Huntley - "Especial thanks to Gordon Smith for his excellent portrayal of the 'l7th Century' participants at our Pine Tree dedication — the be-wigged E. W. Bury and D. WampumArnold. He caught your expressions so well. Charlotte, the younger daughter, is now in Kuwait training with a new corp. (blessed by the British Embassy). Will report further after more development. Thanks for the memory." Charlie - keep us current on the wandering Huntley tribe, all of whom graced the 40th so well.
Final note from our Maryland correspondent on the doings of our very busy Class Treasurer. One of Vice President Spiro Agnew's last acts as Governor of Maryland was the appointment of a Water Sciences board and, you're right, HarryB. Cummings, vice president and general manager of Koppers Co., Inc., was appointed to a three-year term. When will we see you in Washington, Gus? Hope it's in New York for all of you April 9.
