THE 41st ANNUAL DINNER MEETING of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Philadelphia was held at the Sylvania Hotel on Monday evening, March 22, with 76 alumni and guests attending.
On April 22, 1935, Dean Neidlinger made his first visit to Philadelphia to address an annual meeting of Dartmouth Alumni. This 41st meeting marked the fifth appearance of our Dean in the role of speaker and we thoroughly enjoyed the force and vitality of his talk concerning the future of the privately endowed college in the world today. Dartmouth, as well as other such institutions, must turn to some of the following sources to fill the gap between what an undergraduate pays for his education and what that education actually costs: I—private1—private benefactors, 2 alumni fund, 3—corporate gifts, 4—government subsidy.
Among the guests welcomed to our meeting were three fathers of undergraduates: Lou Young, Tom Ringe, and Bob Stuart. The meeting progressed under the guiding hand of Jack McLaughlin '28, toastmaster and retiring president, who called on various officers for reports. Herm Trefethen '26, our perennial treasurer, read a detailed financial report audited by a couple of Tuck School grads and announced a balance of some $600 in our treasury. At that point two prominent alumni who graduated some twenty-five years ago offered to boost that total to $1000. These men, who prefer to remain anonymous, will be glad to know that the executive committee decided to turn their check over to the Hopkins Fund.
Your secretary asked all alumni to stand up by classes and once again 1928 won the case of Scotch with eight members present, while Phil Chase '07 nosed out Steve Rutherford 'O8 to represent the oldest class. It was announced that plans would be made for several family gatherings in the spring and summer with the next big meeting that pre-Penn game Smoker in the fall!
Following a short talk by Sherry Baketel '20, our representative to the Alumni Council, who thanked all the alumni who spent so much time interviewing some 462 applicants for the Class of '51 from our area, these officers were elected for the coming year: President—Ernest A. Wright 3rd '28; vice president —John Flanagan '28; treasurer—Herm Trefethen '26; secretary—Cornwall Miller '39. Dick Frame '28 handled the showing of the new color sound film HANOVER 1947.
