There is but one topic which is preponderant with 1900 at this time and that is the passing of one of our most cherished members, Chelsea Atwood, whose death was briefly noted in the January issue and which is the subject of an article in the In Memoriam section of this MAGAZINE. But, personally, 1900 feels more deeply in regard to Chelsea than can be set forth in any formal obituary. He was one of us so long; he was so much our own in all those years. Practically never ab- sent from class gatherings, at them he was voluble, argumentative, assertive, whole- souled, a center of genial contention, of animated debate. Gifted with a voice of singular penetrativeness, his advantage thereby in such contentions was obvious. Nor did he ever lack for ideas. Moreover his poses added to his effectiveness: the pose of the rural Vermonter (which, by birth, he was); the pose of the sturdy Democrat (which, at times, he was) in a class made up largely of reactionary Republicans (which was usually the case). 1900 gatherings will never be the same without him as a center of interest. Collector of funds for more than fifty years, he had against him the combined and separate efforts of every one of us "to put something over on Chels," which, so far as the secretary knows, never once happened in all that time. Successful in business from the first, his tales of various dealings in the marts of trade, usually hilarious in character, were always of interest. Less apparent, but known to many of us, was his quieter side, his stern rectitude, his almost shrinking modesty concerning the qualities which in him were so genuine and so effective, his wide-reaching but publicity-avoiding generosity, manifested toward many ends, not at least toward his college.

Shaken by various physical weaknesses, most of all by a recent operation of great severity, none the less he had planned to attend the Round-Up last June, as he had always done. At the last moment, however, he felt that he must give up the plan because he no longer considered himself capable of the efforts which he always put forth at these gatherings; efforts which had so much to do with their success. We deplored his absence as we must now continue to do in all the time to come.

At the end the College was still in his mind. His will contains a provision for an endowment of $5000 for a scholarship the income to be awarded to a candidate entering Dartmouth from his beloved Chelsea, or, if such a candidate is lacking at any period, to one coming from Orange County, Vt.
