Probably because your seceratry was retiring from medical practice he thought the whole class was on the way out. As I have twice told you "'tis not so." For this issue I am, however, retiring as secretary and letting Tom Barnes take over. Here follows his story of a visit to "Duke" Anguera exactly as he wrote it to me:
"While we were staying at our daughter's in Connecticut, I called up "Duke" Anguera and told him we were driving over the next day—say about noon. To my amazement, darned if he and the Duchess didn't invite us to come to lunch. I tried to explain that I really wasn't trying to bum a meal. But they insisted.
"So the next day about noon we pulled up in front of the dearest, little old, two hundred year old house, such as you find only in New England, with a big mail box lettered H. De Anguera. At the door we were welcomed with a greetings such as one Dartmouth family extends only to another of the same tribe.
"Lunch over, and what a lunch, we surveyed the house. One room was fitted as a manual arts shop. Here "Duke" invites anyone, young or old, male or female to come and work out any project he or she may have in mind.
"Well, I thought, here is a country minister who feels his job extends beyond making parochial calls and preaching a weekly sermon.
"But that was only the beginning. Listen! The town wanted a manual arts course. The school board commissioned "Duke" to buy and set up equipment. He took me to the little one room school building which he had converted into as fine a manual arts room as I have ever seen. With the building ready, there arose a difficulty. The town couldn't find a manual arts teacher. You've guessed it. Sure, "Duke" took over the job, two days a week.
"Then the town got the idea they needed a playground and athletic field. I wonder who inspired that idea. "Duke" doesn't say. There his engineering skill proved pretty valuable. You should see the blueprints of football and baseball fields, a swimming pool, play grounds. Better than seeing the blueprints—you should see the layout itself, practically completed under "Duke's" supervision.
"It seems to me that in the four years ofhis pastorate in this small town "Duke Anguera" has pretty nearly made himself theindispensable citizen."
