Your secretary desires to express his appreciation of the cordial Season's Greetings of his classmates and members of the Class Family Group, which, as the years pass, contribute increasingly to the enjoyment and real spirit of the Yuletide Season.
We all know that our Class President "Fergie," to his many friends, has been living since retirement in the town of Cape Elizabeth on the rock-bound coast of the State of Maine. He is fond of his home there near the sea and nowadays seldom leaves it. His grandson Hardy Ferguson Perry, during the late fall, spent several weeks there recuperating from injuries received last August from falling into the hold of the ship he was working on while loading cargo in New York. As soon as he had recovered sufficiently to travel, Fergie took him in his car to New York to have a check-up with his doctor who treated his injuries at time of the accident. He now is practically well again and soon will be able to go back to work. On the way to New York they stopped at Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., to see Fergie's son and namesake, who lives there. This son's daughter about two years ago married John Cedarholm, associated with the International Business Machine Company. He works on calculating machines and recently finished making a great machine for the Navy. Just now he is at work on a clock which is intended to keep accurate time for a century or more. He expects to receive a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University soon. They have a son about six months old. After leaving Hastings-on-Hudson they continued on to Pennsylvania to pay a visit at the home of our classmate's favorite granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Perry Martin, the wife of a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps, who has three children, a boy about 12, and two girls respectively 9 and 7 years old. It was a happy reunion with this family and Fergie returned home to resume the easy, comfortable life he enjoys at Cape Elizabeth.
After a lapse of many years, with no word coming from the family of one of our deceased classmates, your secretary recently received a letter stating that his name and signature on a check of the New England Historic Genealogical Society had just passed through the hands of the writer and answered a question the writer had been asking her husband: "What has become of Mr. Bartlett and the other surviving members of Dartmouth '89?" This letter, which opened up in such an unusual way, contact with a member of the family of a deceased classmate, was written by Mrs. J. Crawford Hartman - the former Helen Blanchard, daughter of the late Rev. Edward B. Blanchard of our Class. The check referred to was in payment for a copy of Ancestry and Descendants of TielmanVan Vleeck by Jane Van Vleeck, published in 1955 by The William Byrd Press, Inc., Richmond, Va. - a valuable genealogical record of an important family, in the preparation for the publication of which Mrs. Hartman, skilled in research work in genealogy, has been working for several years. With all humility, Mrs. Hartman states, "It is the most impressive genealogy I have ever put out and I am proud of it." From his knowledge of this publication, your secretary heartily vouches for her statement, and the author, on a front page of the book, gives Mrs. Hartman generous credit in these words: "Indebtedness and gratitude to Helen B. Hartman for her research and valuable editorial assistance."
Mrs. Hartman is one of the five daughters of our classmate (who died June 15, 1947), all of whom are married and still living. The oldest, Mrs. Rae V. Comerford (Marion Isabel Blanchard), who lives in Bedford, N. H., was '89's "class baby" - the first child of a member of our Class to be born after graduation. All five daughters are active in club and church work. Mrs. Walter E. Holden (Charlotte Blanchard) of Newtonville, Mass., has recently been elected Regent of her D.A.R. Chapter in Newton. Mr. and Mrs. J. Crawford Hartman reside at 21 Thirty Third Road, Long Island City, N. Y. The Riverside Church, in the City of New York, has been their church home since it was built 25 years ago.
