Things have been pretty bad up here in the north country. No snow. Even if we are blessed with tons and tons of the stuff before Washington's Birthday, this department has received a tip that the Boston & Maine has been seriously thinking of sending a snow train from White River Jet. to New York just so we could use our skis once this year.

But getting down to more serious stuff, we gained our second Rhodes Scholar with the appointment in December of George Munroe from the Great Lakes District to that honor. Finishing up at Harvard Law, he will join Jerry Blanchet at Merry Old Oxford in the fall.

The Bill Maecks and the Frank Hartmanns were seen at the Tom Braden wedding Dec. 18 in New York City. And this being the month of Valentines, we have several items for our Hearts & Flowers Dept. As reported briefly last month, Bob Williams of the city staff of the Providence Evening Bulletin was married Dec. 4 in Barrington, R. I. to Ellen Douglas and they are now at home at 226 Gano St., Providence, following a motor trip to New Hampshire. Herb Harrigan, whose journalistic talents have finally been recognized, reports he was unable to make Bob's wedding but did attend a post-honeymoon reception in Warren, R. I. in mid-December. (Herh works for the same publisher and has been moved from the Warwick sticks to the city staff of the morning paper, the Providence Journal.)

Gene Wiley also made a trip down the middle aisle. He was married Nov. 20 to Eleanor Sullivan o£ Richmond Hill, N. Y. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Forest Hills.

And two distinguished class members, DacyStevens and Martin "Killer" Kane, have announced similar intentions. Dacy is engaged to Audre Billington of Rye, N. Y. (Adelphi College). She is a member of the nursing staff of the United Hospital there while Dacy is finishing his studies at Fordham Law School. Killer's fiancee is Patricia Leavitt of Stamford, Conn., a member of the Junior League there and an alumna of the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence.

A message received from a carrier pigeon who lost his bearings momentarily reveals that a son, John Edward, was born to the Edward lngrahams Sept. 19 in the romantic sounding community of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Word from Charlie "Killer" Kane from the Cleveland Clinic says that the Brad Copelands are the beaming parents of a daughter, Priscilla, their second. Betty and Charlie were planning to take advantage of a week's vacation Christmastime to visit Melrose.

If this were the duckboard season, we could blame the tardiness of the following items on a Hanover Inn bellhop who slipped and nearly drowned in front of College Hall. Anyway, this is my first opportunity to report that Phil Brooks and the Jerry von Wedels were at the local hostelry in mid-November.

Cue Magazine for Dec. 4 had a two-page spread featuring a pictorial quiz on the ballet by Jerry Guyther, described as"one of the best of the younger New York artists now working exclusively with the new-old collage (paste-up) technique in vogue this year." In each surrealist collage Jerry selected elements from five of the most familiar classic ballets and used them as imaginative key symbols. Frankly, in our humble opinion, the editor of Cue showed less imagination and printed so much text under each collage that even we got three out of five without peeking at the answers.

Fritz Geller, one of the latest Dartmouth men to join American Optical in Southbridge, Mass., reports that his work there is very interesting. "To date I have been going through the Frames Division," he writes. "I've completed the tour of the gold and gold fill section and am now in the zyl (plastic) frames section. The big factor in favor of a training course like this is that when I hit a job that is boring I never have to be bored long. A day is perhaps the longest stretch at any one type of work."

In Hanover during the week between Christmas and New Year's was Bud Kast with a group of his students from the Short Hills (N. J.) Country Day School who were attending Rog Brown's Hanover Inn Ski School. Fortunately they had enough snow for all but two days.

Received a nice card from Hilda and HerbMarx, who are both with Scholastic Magazine in New York. Herb reported that John Hutchinson of WBEN-TV Buffalo wrote a special article for Scholastic on television recently.

Lee Anderson has moved to 13721 12 S.W., Seattle 66, Wash., where he is a claims adjuster for the Hartford Accident & Indemnity Co.

We have been reminded by A1 Dickerson of the Admissions Office and his affable assistant, Bob Hage, that three members of our class deserve personal mention for the work they are doing as chairmen of alumni interviewing committees. So let's give an Indian yell to each of them, Maurice Dampier, Bob McQueen and Lamed Waterman, who will help, along with other classmates, between now and the end of March in picking the Class of 1953.

Forgive us if we insert at this point a few personal remarks for the benefit of the members of the Woodward Hall Junggeselle Gesellschaft Nr. 1943. A check of the bachelors remaining among Woodward Hall alumni at the Fifth Reunion in June revealed that the ranks had withstood both war and marriage amazingly well during the past five years. We have to report, however, that one of this mellowed society is about to turn in his membership card. Cause of this defection is a Miss Dorothy Chase of Durham, N. H. Who is this deserter, you ask? Brace yourself, men. It is yours truly.

And now if you have recovered sufficiently from the shock, let's all give a Wah-Hoo-Wah to each of the 1948 Alumni Fund contributors listed below.

Fund Contributors for 1948 300 Gifts (Participation Index 59). Total gifts: 12,711.75 (62% of objective). JOHN A. KOSLOWSKI, Class Agent.
