On Saturday evening, March 26, the Wellesley Senior High School was the scene of one of the most gala alumni gatherings yet to be held in this area—the occasion being that of the first concert of the Dartmouth Glee Club's 1949 spring tour.
Considerable publicity had been given this event both by way of mailings to members and in the newspapers, with the result that the affair was a sellout—Bos seats plus 15 or 20 standing room tickets.
Two busses, bearing the Glee Club members, arrived in Wellesley about 5:00 P.M. where they were met by a fleet of cars whose owners were the hosts of various groups of boys overnight. For such excellent cooperation in helping to solve this housing problem we owe thanks to H. L. Niles '07, Alex Jardine '16, Murray C. Harvey '20, Francis H. Lee '20, George H. Macomber '20, Olney S. Morrill '20, Chester N. Wiley '20, Dick Litchfield '22, and A. A. Adams Jr. '24. Additional housing was provided by other local alumni who have sons or other relatives in the Glee Club.
A special Wah-Hoo-Wah should be noted here for Mary and Dick Litchfield '22 and Hazel and George Macomber '20, all of whom spent many an hour of tireless work in handling the numerous arrangements and negotiations necessary to make this type of an affair a success. The Macombers and the Litchfields, in addition to everything else, held a buffet supper prior to the concert which was attended by several members of the Glee Club and by a group of Dana Hall School girls who later added color to the concert by serving as ushers and flower girls. Various other groups of alumni held cocktail parties and dinners before the concert.
Through the efforts of Joy Hodgkins, Wellesley '51, and Eleanor Pope, Wellesley '50, both daughters of Dartmouth '20 men, a dance was held at the Tau Zeta Epsilon Society of Wellesley College to provide an opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment for the Glee Club members after the concert.
The concert itself was the acme in male vocal entertainment for all Dartmouths and non-Dartmouths present. The usual excellent rendition of Dartmouth songs plus the variation afforded by numerous other choral numbers made for "the tops" in musical entertainment, and the complete silence which hung over the entire auditorium during pauses in the singing attested to the rapture of the audience. The Octet was incomparable and obligingly came back on stage for two encores after tumultuous applause by the audience. Paul R. Zeller was at his usual mild and gentlemanly best in conducting the chorus. The voices were as one; the diction, flawless; the harmony and expression, professional.
Special features of the concert were the rendition of Eleazar and Men of Dartmouth with vocal support by the alumni who thronged to the stage and joined in at the invitation of Orton H. Hicks '49, President of the Glee Club, and the piano solos of Joe Hendrich '50 about whose performance local Greens are still raving.
The enthusiastic reception accorded this event is very gratifying to the officers and members of the club who worked hard to arrange it. We hope that we can have another local concert sometime in the future. Meanwhile we'll be looking for your support and suggestions for another year's program at our annual spring dinner meeting in May—place and date to be announced later.
