The series of brief career sketches about living members of 1896 is continued this month with the following from:
HERBERT A. WARDEN
The first year out of College I worked for the Hyer-Sheelan Electric Motor Cos., who repaired motors, built switchboards and did electrical construction, and at the end of the year went to Cornell University for a year of post-graduate work in mechanical and electrical engineering.
HIS HONOR THE MAYOR: Herbert A. Warden '96, Mayor of Newburgh, N. Y., shown in poses 54 years apart, is the subject of this month's career sketch.
My brother-in-law, Charles Hewitt, had in the meantime formed the firm of Sheehan and Hewitt Electric Cos., and when I finished the year at Cornell I bought Mr. Sheehan's interest and we formed the firm of Hewitt and Warden, electrical contractors.
Two years later I bought Mr. Hewitt's interest but continued the firm name as it had become well established and did work over an extended area.
Six years ago I sold my entire interest and retired. During these years I served as President of the Hudson Valley Electric League, Vice-President of the New York State Electric Contractors and Dealers Association, which covered the entire State of New York, President of the Newburgh Board of Education, Master of Newburgh Lodge F. & A. M. and other civic organizations.
In 1939 I was elected Mayor of Newburgh and am at present serving on my third fouryear term which expires January 1, 1952, having been elected three consecutive times. This is a general outline covering over 50 years in which I have not entered into any details.
At present I reside, very happily, at 356 Grand St., Newburgh, N. Y., with the second Mrs. Warden, my first wife having passed on over 14 years ago.
Enclosed you will find a recent photograph, one of many which constantly appear in the local papers in connection with civic affairs and which illustrates what the ravages of time can do to a handsome individual.
