Katharine M. Quint

Dartmouth has many distinguished families. One of these is the Quint family.

The first to go to Dartmouth was the father - Reverend Alonzo H. Quint, A.B. 1846, ФBK, M.A., D.D., who was Professor at Auburn and Andover Theological seminaries, distinguished preacher, Trustee of Dartmouth College 1870 until his death, November 4, 1896.

A son — Wilder D. Quint, A.B. 1887, ФBK, M.A., was an outstanding journalist in Boston.

A son - Reverend John H. Quint, Dartmouth 1887-1890 A.B., Bowdoin 1897, ФBK, D.D., 1913, was like his father, a noted preacher.

Daughter - Katharine M. Quint, Valedictorian Dover, N. H. High School, 1885 (Your Secretary graduated in 1892), Wellesley College 1889, ФBK, received the M.A. from Dartmouth, 1896, in Latin and Greek. The course was given by Professor Adams as a seminar. Attending also were Craven Laycock '96, Roland Stevens '95 and Benjamin Marshall '97.

Miss Quint won a scholarship at Yale and studied the Classics 1908-1910. She chose teaching as her career, teaching at Tabor Academy, Salt Lake Academy, Goucher College and Worcester. In her long career as teacher not one student failed the College Boards.

The Class of 1896 is proud of the honor that Katharine Quint was the first woman student to be admitted to Dartmouth and is a member of our class. Following her example, six other women have received graduate degrees. No woman has been admitted as a candidate for the A.B. degree.

Katharine celebrated her 87th birthday November 21 last. Her friends and neighbors honored her with a reception.

In June last she attended the 65th anniversary of her graduation from Wellesley. She and a friend, Class of 1890, led the alumnae parade. Katharine lives at 7 Vine Street, Manchester, Mass., with a niece, Miss Elizabeth Quint. She is quite blind and has learned to read Braille. She is interested in football and baseball and follows the games on the radio. She is a long time friend of Bill Cunningham who was associated with her brother Wilder in newspaper work.

The Class of '96 extends all good wishes and awards an Oscar to Katharine Quint.

A very good biographical sketch appeared in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, Page 22, issue of December 1951.
