Registrar Robert O. Conant '13 turned out to be a pretty good prognosticator in the matter of 1950-51 enrollment. In the late spring he estimated that registration this fall would total "about 2800" and the final, official figures give a total of 2,809.
The overall figure is broken down into 2,608 undergraduates and 201 graduate students. The usual numerical progression holds for the four undergraduate classes, with the seniors tallied at an even 600, the juniors at 628, the sophomores at 651 and the freshmen at 719. Ten undergraduates from foreign lands are enrolled with an unclassified status.
Among the graduate students, 75 are enrolled in Tuck School, 20 in Thayer School, six in the combined Tuck-Thayer course, 27 in the regular Medical School course, and 52 young doctors in the special study program which has added such symbols as "M 5 G" and "M 7 G" to the College Directory. Also included in the graduate total are 21 graduate fellows, most of whom are working for Masters' degrees.
This fall's enrollment is a drop of 127 from the 2,936 men studying at Dartmouth a year ago. Veterans in college have decreased sharply, from 730 last fall to approximately 250 at present. Only ten veterans entered with the Class of 1954, compared with 14 in the freshman class last year.
