I am advised by those learned in the science of statistics that I cannot assume that the information to be gleaned from the returns on the class poll shows what a typical classmate is like. They say there is no way to tell whether the 121 returns that I have represent a true sample of the class. On the other hand, they have not been able to indicate any reason why it may not be a true sample. Consequently, if any of you want to assume that what is typical of the 121 whose replies I have analyzed is also typical of the whole class, who is to say that you are wrong? Our sample is somewhat smaller than that used in the article in Life on the poll of the Princeton Class of '32 on its fifteenth reunion, but not much smaller, and therefore some interesting comparisons may be made.

Probably one of the most interesting aspects of the poll (next to the political preference, which has now been beaten to death) is the answer to the question on occupation. Because this question was not scientifically framed, however, the answers defy simple analysis, and I am going to leave them to another column.

Of those replying to the questions, 94% are married. Princeton '32 was only 91%, but we've had an extra year during which there have been several weddings. Maybe that extra year also accounts for the fact that our reports show- almost 7% divorced while Princeton was just under 6%. Three-quarters of those divorced have remarried, showing a noteworthy try-again attitude. About 7% are now single; about 6% (7 in number) reported never having married. The latter should take heart and try it, especially since their chances of success are so much better than the noncollege group, where divorces equal 31% in the whole country.

The replies showed 81% having children, 222 in all, including step and adopted children. Four reported having five or more children, but a plurality (46% of those with children) have only two. Only about 18% of those with children have three, which surprised me in view of the situation here in Washington, where Fanelli, Marsh, MacPhail, Wakelin and I throw the average way up. The returns show that there are about two children per man, which is better than the Princeton figure of Ibut again one year at our age can make a lot of difference in that figure (no pun intended, but it's a pretty good one when you think about it). On the question of sending sons to Dartmouth, most answered that they would, but a quarter of those with children have girls only—they'll have to make house parties do. A fifth of the whole group have no children at all. Life must be duller for them, but a dull moment now and then wouldn't be so bad.

I was surprised at the number who had served in the armed forces, 61% of the whole group. Princeton reported 59%. The Army and Navy were about even, with about 42% apiece, while the Air force had the rest. No one reported being in the Marines. About 15% of those in the armed forces were not commissioned officers.

About 60% reported having attended graduate schools. One quarter of these went to Law School, representing 15% of the entire group. About 12% of the group went to medical school (in which I include dentists). The others took a very wide variety of post-graduate courses, some leading to degrees.

Three-quarters reported having taken their wives to Hanover. I did not include those whose wives had been there only before marriage. There's a big difference between the guy, in the enthusiasm of the chase, takes a girl up there, and the one who, quietly smiling as he reminisces, takes his wife back to the scene of youthful adventure. I wouldn't be the one to call it all one statistic.

The same number as reported being married stated that they owned a car (or two or three). No conclusion may be drawn fronfthis, I'm sure, especially since most of the unmarried ones also reported having cars. About three-quarters of the returns showed home owners, although one or two indicated that their equity might be a little less than could be desired. Also, in these mobile days, some who own their homes are not living in them.

I shall reserve news about individuals for the next issue, and merely call special attention to the following list. If the absence of your name is due to a mistake by the Fund officials, let them know. If it is due to your mistake in failing to make a contribution, start now to accumulate a kitty out of which you will prevent a repetition of the error.

Fund Contributors for 1948 380 Gifts (Participation Index 79). Total gifts: $6,897.40 (81% of objective). J. WARREN MOORE, Class Agent.
