Our esteemed Editor advises us to leave plenty of space for the names of Fund con- tributors in preparing this month's column. "We must make a real effort to hold class- notes copy down to state things more concisely than is your custom, to weed out the inconsequential, and to hold over letters and other excerpts that you might have been planning to quote." That was such a com- forting message that I've been saving it all month, intending to weave variations on the theme throughout the abbreviated column, thereby filling up the usual broad interstices between messages from you-all. But now, 10, I have a fine letter from George Hahn tell- ing of his last summer's vacation, recent travels and the like; from Bo Wentworth, telling of a trip to Arabia and other Middle Eastern points; and one or two others—all of which I'm going to hold for the next col- umn and bask for a month in the warm glow of unwonted abundance.
The Washington Post is all excited about the new building it will soon have, and Brandy Marsh is very active in the direction of the construction operations. He is now as- sistant to the Business Manager of the paper. Joe Fanelli and I were most impressed as lie pointed out his bulldozers, derricks and other puffing equipment in the hole where the building is being placed. I am sure that a nod from him would have gotten us a ride in the scoop of a steam shovel.
I am glad to be able to report that Sey(Jacobson) Rogers, who, as you may recall, took an exam the day after be became the father of his second child, passed successfully and is now called a Drplomate of the Ameri- can Board of Surgery.
The Dartmouth Club of New York reports that Marque Richard has returned from Japan where he advised the Japanese, as part of SCAP, on land planning and resource uti- lization. Ray Bartlett has been appointed manager of the Wheatley Division of Bur- lington Mills.
The Missouri Supreme Court has ap- pointed Tom Curtis to the State Board of Law Examiners. Tom is a member of the firm of Biggs, Curtis and Crossen, a member of the St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners and is the Republican Com- mitteeman in Gravois Township. The clip- ping that tells me all this also says that he and his wife Susan have four children, a girl, 8, and three sons, 6, 4 and 2.
I have also been advised that Dr. LindsayEugene Beaton has been elected president of the staff of the Tucson Medical Center.
Those who admire my boss, the present Secretary of State, have many reasons for their views. An example of what convinces many of them appears in a letter which has obvi- ous interest to '32. It will be found in full on page 764 of the Congregational Record of January 23, in an exchange with a Senator over whether he should reveal the names of his subordinates who drafted a memorandum stating that Formosa had no strategic value. In refusing, he said, "I feel that I, as Secre- tary of State, have responsibility for the work of officials of the Department. Primary re- sponsibility for this particular document, in my opinion, rests with me and secondary re- sponsibility rests with Mr. Howland Sargent, Acting Assistant Secretary of State in Charge of Public Affairs."
