September 29, New Hampshire University opened the football season in Hanover. As has been the case ever since the Bowlens arrived in Vermont, we had with us over the weekend the Raymonds and McFarlands who always make the weekend something to be remembered throughout the year.

The weather was ideal with clear blue skies and the foliage made a beautiful setting. In Hanover the first person we ran into was Les Godwin. Les lives in Winchester, Mass., and is president and general manager of the General Oil Company in Medford. He brought me upr-to-date on his activities in enrollment work, and pointed out that he and Rollie Booma served in adjacent but not conflicting territories in the selling of their product. While it probably isn't so, this sounded to me like a combination in restraint of trade and a juicy morsel for the Federal Trade Commission.

As a matter of fact, Rollie Booma was also in town, I understood, to visit his son who is now a freshman, and a graduate of Kimball Union Academy. Somebody passed along the word that Rollie has recently purchased a tack company, but just how this ties in with the oil business is something that remains to be answered.

Other people who were in town although I didn't see them were Ed Butterworth, CharlieRauch and Phil Peck.

At the game it was nice to sit beside BobPratt and his attractive wife, Dorothy, who were visiting Hanover with their son Donald. Donald, now a sophomore in high school, is considering applying at Dartmouth. At the game we also sat near Tom and Mary Dunnington as well as Herb and Marjorie Chase. Both couples had been at the informal reunion so it seemed we had scarcely said good-bye. Eddie Jeremiah and his wife Lois came by us in the stands and from a distance we also saw the Gil Lowerys.

This job of being a Secretary calls for a great deal of reading to keep up with the wanderings of the Class of '30. For instance only last week we spent an evening going through a recent issue of the Macy Star and found KirtMeyer mentioned twice. In one instance, Kiit as vice-president was participating in a faiewell ceremony to a retired employee, while on another page a group of variously attired individuals had their picture taken in front of the 34th Street entrance and are recorded as "Meyer Players Score in Major League Show." Apparently they play some kind of ball at Macy's that you and I aren't up-to-date on.

As political activity reaches a higher peak, it may be interesting to record that Meade Alcorn Jr. was greeted by a thousand of his fellow inhabitants of Suffield, Conn., upon his return from the GOP National Convention. We understand Red is now vice-chairman of the Republican National Committee with definite possibilities of going higher. At about the same time, Fred Scribner was quoted in San Francisco as saying, "I'm going to retire from active politics and become a Statesman.'" What that indicates is just not clear since Fred plans to go back to Washington after the Maine election and act as general counsel for the Treasury.

According to records at the Hanover Inn, there have been various '30 men in Hanover in addition to those at the informal reunion. These have included Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McDonough, Dan Loeser from Cleveland and Jack Rich. We run into Jack from time to time because he is a part-time Vermonter ever since he purchased his country home in Westminster West which is just a few miles from here.

Following is another installment of new addresses for some of the Class. If some of them have moved into your area wouldn't it be a good idea to give them a word of welcome? James G. K. From the Amesbury, Mass., newspaper we learned that Merle Kimball was stricken with polio last summer, but has been able to return to teaching in the Amesbury school where he will teach in the Mathematics Department.

The last item for this month relates to Commander Anthony Wayne Van Leer the guitarist par excellence. He somehow or other creeps into an article in the Washington Post and Times Herald which described Sherwood Forest, "A summer community o£ perhaps 350 families of the Washington and Baltimore area." Van gets into the story because the previous day the Community had staged a most successful talent show with Van chalking up the most applause with an all-boy chorus which he had coached.

And to those o£ you who receive this November issue in time - a reminder —New York —New Jersey - Connecticut get-to-gether Thursday night, November 1; the Executive Meeting in New York November a and the Yale game November 3. We'll be in the bowl and I'll be the fellow writing names and addresses on the back of an envelope with a stub pencil.
