A Chicago isolationist newspaper noted for coloring its news says Senator Vandenberg is working to have his son Arthur H. Vandenberg Jr. succeed to his Senate seat. Walking through the Waldorf-Astoria lobby recently (after failing to find the '28 directorate of the hotel), I bumped into Bob Clark, who was giving the old college try for Strathmore Paper at a paper industry convention. Bob had lunch with Si Simons, Executive Assistant Manager of the Waldorf, and had a great time going over old times at Hanover. Si reports seeing Jud Moulton, Counsel for New England Tel & Tel, who was attending a conference arranged by A. T. & T.

While in Miami in March I enjoyed talking with Ken Beal and Cliff Dwinnell. I spent some time in the new buildings at the University of Miami, where Ken is registrar. The university had 2500 students in 1946 when Ken assumed his present position—it now has 11,000 students. Cliff was in New England all last summer—thought he'd have to have an operation, but was relieved to find it wasn't necessary. His trouble is high blood pressure.

Mary, Scotty (age 7) and I flew over to Havana where we had a wonderful time with Dana and Verna Condon. At their suggestion we had arranged our visit to coincide with Havana's mardi gras, a gala two-day affair which we were fortunate to be able to watch from the balcony of the American Club on the Prado. Dana and Verna entertained us royally and drove us wherever we wanted to go. Dana is assistant general agent for the United Fruit Co. in Havana—he has worked in Costa Rica and Cuba for the same com- pany since graduation. He has two attractive daughters who resemble Verna. Joan, the first '2B child born outside the United States, will enter Dickinson College in the fall. Both girls speak and write Spanish like natives and neither has ever seen snow.
