From some Maine friends we have a fantastic story about hotelman Jack Waller. They tell us the Maine papers were full of accounts about the "gold-plated trees" and that they, and Jack, were written up in Time. It seems that some of Maine's "rugged individualism" has been absorbed by Jack during the past five summers that he has been Managing Director of the Old Fort Inn at Kennebunkport. Annoyed by some trees on the next property which leaned over his lawn and interfered with the view of the ocean, Jack had three of them cut down. The owner brought suit and the court took a dim view of the matter, ordering Jack to pay the owner one thousand dollars per tree. At last report Jack had filed an appeal.

A note from Les Mason makes it clear he is hoppin' mad at us for stating in these columns over a year ago that he was working on his thesis at the Hoover War Library. Actually he received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1940, and is now working on a book on Germany. Our apologies, Les.
Jack and Pearl Phelan's daughter Martha (remember the beautiful little girl at our 10th reunion?) is a freshman at Wellesley this year. She graduated from Dana Hall last spring. We're not set up to operate a date bureau, but we are glad to tip off '28 sons who may be looking for dates.
The Phelan family continued their world travels last summer. In 1947 it was Europe, then Alaska, and now a two-months' trip to South Africa. Jack writes:
"On June 30, we (and that includes Jackie, aged 11) left New York on the 5.5. African Endeavor and 17 days later landed at Capetown. For 21 whirlwind days we toured the Union of South Africa by auto, bus, train and plane. We drove 900 miles up the east coast through Port Elizabeth and the Transkii (native reserve) to Durban. From there we went by train to Johannesburg—took in the above-ground portion of a gold mine and saw the native dance competitions.
"Then we flew 600 miles north to Victoria Falls in Rhodesia. We got in a small plane and flew for two hours at 100 feet above the ground over the Falls and along the Zambesi River. It was all wild veldt country and we saw a herd of 25 elephants, many buffalo? wildebeast, roan antelope and zebra, and a few hippos and crocodiles in the river. It was the ride of a life-time!
"Returning to jo-burg, we went east by train to Kreuger National Park and stayed two days. There we saw kudu, zebra, impala (small antelope), baboons, giraffe—and followed two lionesses for an hour along a river as they stalked a herd of impala. At times the lionesses were only 50 feet away and we got some wonderful pictures—slides and movies.
"From there to Jo-burg, Pretoria and back to Capetown by train, stopping off at Kimberly to see the inner workings of diamond mining. Seventeen days more on the delightful S.S. African Endeavor brought us back to New York. It was a grand and glorious vacation."
