Now that all of you good people have had several months to go out and make news, let's hear about it. Your poor struggling reporter wants to make a solemn pledge, as of now, to answer any and all correspondence which you worthies send my way. My past record is not to be held against me, I trust, in view of my optimistic assurances of future action. So limber up your writing arms—or better still, induce your wives to do so and let's make this deal a going concern!
Three new daughters put in their appearances in recent months. This has all the earmarks of a significant trend. Fran and AlexHooker found Jean Campbell's arrival in March forced an alteration in their plans to make the reunion. Alex is starting his third year of teaching Spanish at Ripon College in Wisconsin. The Charlie Weinbergs, however, made the reunion and still to welcome the arrival of Jean Rose in mid-July. Jeanne and Jim Doerr not only sent us a birth announcement, but also included a very welcome note as well. Sarah Louise's July arrival brought the Doerr children up to a very respectable three two girls and a boy.
Now that we have the babies out of the way, the next logical topic is, of course, weddings and it just so happens there were a few. BobHill (Lt. Robert 8., pride of East Braintree, Mass., that is), recently commissioned air force officer and pilot, married Miss Merill Nordling of Brockton, Mass. Bob is stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, S. C. Salty Frank Malavasic, Lt. Comdr. USN, took time off from a Harbor Defense course at Treasure Island to marry Miss Marion L. Fletcher of Woodstock. Dick Geppert went half way around the world to end up at the altar. His wedding to Miss Dolores E. Rogers, of Wanamassa, N. J., took place in Saudi Arabia where Dick is with the American Consul General in Dhahran.
Dexter Richards, owner of the famous "Dexters," in Sunapee, received one of the NEC Recreational Development Department's first "Distinguished Service" awards for outstanding work in promoting New England recreation. Say, Dex, what is this NEC I'm talking about? Speaking of promoters, Dave Heald, manager of Mt. Sunapee State Park, made a 3,200-mile, eight-state tour beating the drum for New Hampshire as a vacation land.
W. B. Elcock Jr., sometimes known as the "Sliver," has been named vice-president and secretary of the Progressive Fire Insurance Company, of Atlanta, largest capital stock fire insurance company in Georgia. Walt has been secretary of Progressive since 1947, but now he's a full-fledged VP.
Hal Harlow is to be associate professor of group work and community organization and to be acting director of the major in that field at Springfield College. Before coming to Springfield in 1950, Hal was director of the school of social work, Pierce College, Athens, Greece. Saudi Arabia, Greece some guys really get around.
Another innkeeper in our midst is ErnieFriez, now manager of The Tides Inn, at Irvington, Va. As you all know, this is the unique Tidewater resort which features daily yacht trips for its guests on the Inn's 83-foot yacht, Sun Tan VI.
John de la Montague is still getting himself elected. This time it's to Sigma Xi, national honorary research society at the University of Wyoming. John got his Master's degree there last year and is working for his Ph.B. in geology.
Rollicking Richard Remsen is trying to prove that maybe we're not quite so old as I feel. That frisky ole bachelor (at last reports) teamed with Germaine Glidden to win the national squash racquets doubles championship and they came from behind to do it. Is 1942 really ten years ago?
Dr. Frank E. Bix by Jr. was awarded the Peer P. Johnson Travelling Fellowship which annually goes to one of the outstanding young physicians training as a surgeon at Beverly Hospital, in Beverly, Mass. This permitted Pete to travel to other surgical clinics in this country and Canada to help keep the Beverly Hospital abreast of new developments in other parts of the country.
Bill Harris is another one of our foreign contingent. Bill has been appointed to the public affairs staff of the American Consulate General in Stuttgart, Germany, as a field officer in Heilbronn, Wurttemberg. He has been in Germany since 1950 and lives now in Heilbronn with his wife and two children. Say, Bill, how far is Heilbronn from Alpena, Mich.?
Jack and Nita Zimmer have forsaken San Antonio for Miami, Fla. There was a rumor that Texas was going to tear down all those ghastly sign boards, so Jack packed his up and pulled out. He is having a little difficulty altering his Texas drawl to the south Florida variety but courage, kid, we're all behind you all. That corn pone and fried chicken talk will kill 'em in Cleveland.
That about winds up the works for this month, but for bigger and better class notes we gotta have plenty mail and steady. The clipping service is fine, but only you can give us the latest word on what's new, so make a Doint to drop us a line soon.
DERBY DAY: Snapped just outside the '42 Tent in front of Middle Mass were these happy celebrants: Ad Winship, retiring class agent, his wife Kiki, and Jane and Dave Heald, reunion chairman.
