Dr. Carlos H. Baker '32, known to a large number of readers for the lively erudition of his reviews in the New YorkSunday Times' Book Review section and of his articles and books of criticism, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of English at Princeton University. Professor Baker fills the vacancy caused by the death of Dr. Donald A. Stauffer.

Active in educational matters, as well as being a prolific writer, Professor Baker was formerly acting chairman of the Interdepartmental Faculty Committee that directs Princeton's Special Program in the Humanities. He has served on the editorial board of The Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, and the National Council of Teachers of English. In 1950 he was appointed editor of Princeton's "Good Reading" Supplement, a list of books selected by faculty members in different fields as a guide to alumni readers.

Professor Baker is a noted authority on both modern American and English literature. He is the author of Shelley'sMajor Poetry: The Fabric of a Vision and his most recent book, Hemingway: TheWriter As Artist, is the first full-length portrait of Hemingway as artist, stylist and craftsman.

In addition to writing critical essays, reviews and poetry, Professor Baker has edited a two-volume anthology of American literature and also a volume of selections from the poetry and prose of Words- worth and Shelley.

Professor Baker has been a member of the Princeton faculty for 15 years. He received the Master's degree at Harvard in 1933 and his doctorate from Princeton in 1940.
