Since the advent of the last column, Childs has taken a little trip for himself to the Windy City that's Chicago, in case you don't know. That guy must live right, for the weather was perfect, just like it was when he was in Hanover for the June reunions. It's been seven years since I (to revert to the first person) was back to the old stamping grounds. I left the Garden Spot (that's Aurora, O.) along about 8 in the a.m. and landed in Chi that early evening. What a sight it was wheeling along the shore drive and seeing Chicago's well-known sky line all lit up. It's almost breathtaking. My old friend Dick Baldwin, known to Chicago Dartmouths of 15 years ago as the Official Dartmouth father, had made a deal for quarters in the apartment building where he lives. This was easy, because his son Vinnie '23 owns the building and what that guy says, goes. This was on a Friday night. The next day I was scheduled to go out to Barrington to spend the weekend with a couple old pals of mine, Gus Hallberg, Cornell '09 and Hass Pynchon, Mercersburg '05, who used to lay claim to being the Great American Athlete.
Barrington, as some of our classmates may recall, is where J. Russell Pettengill used to reside with his first wife. In fact, he spent time in helping develop that section until now it's populated by a bunch of the upper crust. Hallberg told me that only recently Pettengill had been out to his house for dinner, that he had gone back into his old game of organizing printed forms for industry, that he was living in Pennsylvania Mt. Hope, as I recall it with either his fourth or fifth wife. That's something else that's hard to keep track of Pettengill's marriages.
The weekend slipped away, what with music, beefing, plenty good food, sailing, and, for the time being, being a part of the life that bluebloods live.
Before leaving Aurora, I had written NutRoot to meet me for the Monday Dartmouth lunch, which he did and on time. Those lunches aren't as they used to be when I was in Chi. They have just a handful. I saw Nate Whiteside '20, Al Louer and Tubby Weymouth '26, Diamond Bill Juergens '23, who's still a bachelor, Ken Saunders '48, the personable son of Spic '22 and Curt Kimball '50, the son of Butch '23. Curt eloped with Ken's sister. Unless I miss my guess that makes 'em brothers-in-law. Nut, in a burst of generosity, paid for my lunch. He told me that he's doing consultation work on merchandising. The guy looks good and it was good to see him.
Among the Dartmouths I contacted in this busy metropolis were Bub Coombs '07, still with Paine-Webber as of yore; Wallie Schinz '20, the No. 1 ladies' man of the village, also with Paine-Webber; Earl Herman '06, who keeps in physical trim through exercise and watching his diet; Louie Leverone '04, the big food purveyor, who sits in an office as big as the average living room. When he was with; Stein-Hall he used to receive a visitor, talk on the phone and dictate letters all at the same (time. Louie is slowing down somewhat." We were interrupted only a couple times. I dropped up to see Joe Cheney '16, who's got a business called: the Merrimac Clock Co. Joe wears glasses with one of those extra lens sticking out at one side. Professional. Bull Hadden was out, but I talked to him by phone. From reports, you wouldn't know the guy. He's lost around 100 lbs. I also talked to Billy Williams '10 on the phone. He continues to go strong in advertising. Nat Leverone '06, the übiquitous member of his class, was out on the Pacific Coast making speeches. You could hardly call that news, because he's always making speeches, even in his sleep. Bill Blatner '05 was out of town. Vinnie Baldwin '23 bought me a feed bag one noon, and I had two or three dinners and breakfasts with Dick, the father. Park Stickney '08 had been East with his little woman Sue and returned on Tuesday following my arrival. We went out to Evanston to spend the night and had dinner at the University Club with Gardner Howe '25. Gardner isn't married yet. He and BillJuergens should talk things over.
That did it. It was good to get back and see some of the old gang and meet some of the new Dartmouths growing up. The first thing I knew I was on my way back to Aurora with some pleasant memories that'll stay with me. I can recommend to aging classmates junkets such as this.
Some of the lads with their spouses have been visiting Hanover and stopping at the Inn (adv.). They are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dudley, Rochester, N. Y. (have you looked up DeaconGraves, Ben?); Dr. and Mrs. Bill Holzer, Worcester, Mass.; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wing, South Dartmouth, Mass. (sounds like it might be a good place to live); Mr. and Mrs. BobHolmes, Boston.
A letter from Buster Brown written in his own handwriting, gives word that he's slowly coming along. By now he's out of the cast; he's been taking light exercise, but you can't exactly call the outlook roseate. Buster has gotten a big lift from letters he's received from Nut Root, B. Matthew Scully, Jock Adams,Ced IVellsted, J. P. Follansbee, Art Sporborg, Dutch Irwin '11, and Walt Powers '06, to name a few. Keep 'em going, men.
I've received letters from Sid Hazelton who kindly sent me that clipping about the Lebanon football team that was coached by DutchSchildmiller and Mickey McLean; and one from Ed Ford, who runs an antique shop in Marshfield, Mass. Ed sent me a program of the Marshfield Daniel Webster ceremony, also a book by Ellis Parker Butler of Pigs IsPigs fame.
Editor Charlie Widmayer won't stand for any more space, maybe not this much, so I'll close by charging all you good '09ers to pay your dues to Bertie French like good little boys.
