The news this month is again somewhat thin, but a number of you have sent me enough info so that we can work at least a few names into the following lines. The rest of you, please drop me a postcard sometime so that this column can try to be as representative of the class as a whole as possible. Just two minutes of your time, believe it or not, can truly be a big help - and don't forget that a lot of your remembered and unremembered classmates are really wondering just whatever happened to you. Also, drop me a card if you meet any other '48s and let me know anything that seems interesting. I hate to keep harping on this tune, but it's about the only one at present that the available notes can set up. No lousy pun intended.
Have met several of the class in and about the Hub of the Universe, Boston, on various recent weekends. Ran into Tom Richardson, a '48 I hadn't seen since the end of our first semester in 1944, just before the Harvard game. He was one of the original Wheelerites that first term, and he's now living and working near Boston. Saw Al McAllister and his wife at a pre-game cocktail party. Al has been in training with the Phoenix Insurance Co. for over a year at various points around New England. He seems at last to have been more or less permanently stationed, however, to his great relief is now working in Boston and living in Waltham. In case, by the way, that any of you, his friends, wrote to Al and received no answer during the past year, it may be because some of his mail went to previous addresses and was not forwarded, as well as the fact that another Al McAllister apparently works for Phoenix. Al said he wishes to apologize for any apparent oversights on his part. They were strictly unintentional.
Another old-timer seen in Boston was lawyer Jack Tracy. Jack is at present employed in a law office in Portsmouth, N. H., a point close enough to western Massachusetts to enable him to see his girl at Smith as often as he likes —which is very often. Jack said he saw Jay Rutledge in Boston one day last July. The two of them had a "real toot around the town." Jay was described as being in stocks and bonds in San Francisco. Jack also mentioned that John "Shoe Polish" Lanzetta "is really at the marriage stage —and she is fabulous!" How about it, John? Is this slander? As far as we know, the Lanzett is working for a construction firm near Albany.
Ed Leede is now in his second and final year at Harvard Business School. He doesn't have time to play any more pro basketball with the Boston Celtics. Nevertheless, through some humorous mistake, a recent Celtic advertising poster showed Ed in the limelight as the epitome of the team. In his spare time Ed is now working for a Norwegian firm attempting to get its products on the American market. Norway's Tor Arneberg '50 is his roommate and partner.
Another '48 seen in Boston and Hanover has been Colin Stewart. Stew is in his second year at Harvard's School of Architecture where his original design bent is given plenty of chance to express itself.
Bobby Merriam sent along some good news about the Phil Shepards, for on August 20 arrived their son William Bradbury in Berlin, Germany. Phil is a Lt. (jg) with the Navy in Europe. Congratulations!
Other news from the family front shows that Dr. Jerry Zins and Miss Dianne Ruth Paley were married in mid-October. Dianne is an alumna of Bentley School and Bennett Junior College. The ceremony and reception took place in the Terrace Room of the Hotel Plaza. Jerry is a member of staff at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn.
The other marriage we have news of this month was that of Milt Kurtz and Miss Diane Judith Barkan on September 7 in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Pierre in New York City. The bride is an alumna of Adelphi Academy and Cornell. The couple honeymooned in California and Mexico, and are now living in Forest Hills, Long Island.
Among the '48s in Hanover for the Holy Cross game was Dick Barlow. He stayed in the College's fashionable beddery, the Hanover Inn, but no other '48s were registered there that weekend.
Quite a few members of the class have taken up more or less permanent residence in or near Hanover. Prejudiced though I am, I can't think of a better region within which to live. Ev Chapman, for example, lives a few miles down the Connecticut where he's an electronics engineer in Charlestown, N. H., the town made famous in Kenneth Roberts' Northwest Passage. Joe Proctor lives in Hanover itself, and is the owner of the Proctor Wood Products Co. How about some more information about your firm and products, Joe? Bill Wright lives in nearby Lebanon where he's a teacher and coach at Lebanon High School. This must be his second or third year there. His address is Heater Road, Leb.
Have a little news here concerning several of the '48s in the Services. Lt. Gene Finke is aboard the USS Everett somewhere in the Pacific area. Ens. Jack McFalls' new address is likewise through San Francisco, which probably means that he and his wife of a few weeks are now on Guam. Lt. (jg) Ray Richard is on the aircraft carrier USS Leyte somewhere in the Atlantic area. When he's ashore in the States he makes his wigwam in Jackson Heights, L. I. Lt. Vin Vayo is listed as residing in Norfolk, Va., but that's all we know at the moment. Another member of whom we have practically no news is Capt. Jack Anderson. His home address, however, is San Francisco.
Some new locations. Pete Betts is a Personnel Assistant with U.S. Gypsum in Jersey City, and lives across the river in N.Y.C. DickBredenberg is a student pastor at Drew Seminary in Madison, N. J. Ed McLaughlin is an Asst. Chief Consumers Representative with Scott Paper Co. in Chester, Pa. He's living in nearby Springfield. Dr. Johnny Price is an interne at the Colorado General Hospital in Denver. Have heard that Bill Malone is also located in Denver, though have no details. Maybe you two could get together. Any news appreciated. Ed Shipper is a cotton merchant with the Shipper Cotton Co. in Florence, Ala. Joe Luyckx is an Accountant with Ford Motor in Detroit.
Johnny Fenno carried out quite an honorary formality for Dartmouth a couple of weeks ago when he acted as representative of the College at the inauguration of Dr. Russell J. Humbert as 19th president of DePauw University at Greencastle, Ind. on October 18. John and representatives of 215 other colleges and universities marched in the inaugural procession. The institutions ranged from the University of Rome, founded in 1303, to the Universidad de los Andes, founded in 1949 in Bogota, Colombia.
Guess that empties the mailbox for now. Don't forget Reunion of '48 in '54! See you up the river next month.
