It's May and we are now in the midst of the 1952 Fund Drive. Many of your classmates, as assistant class agents, are spending a great deal of their own time trying to make the 1948 contribution a real success this year. If you haven't already sent-in your help to the College, be sure to get it off soon. It has been necessary to raise the tuition by $125 per year to try to close the gap between breaking even and a considerable deficit. Even then, the tuition will cover only about 50% of the cost of each student's education.
Last year, the average gift was approxi- mately $35. Very few of the members of '4B even came near that much. Many did not help at all. We had a participation index of only 51% and reached only 53% of a very conserva- tive objective. The truth is that while we were at Dartmouth, we contributed in tuition and fees no more than 50% of the cost of what we received. It is up to us now, not only to help repay the deficit we built up while we were there, but to provide the help for others who are now at Dartmouth.
If you gave last year, give more generously this year. If you did not give l&st year, now is the time to start repaying the cost of your Dartmouth education. None of u.s wish to see Dartmouth fall behind, whether it is in the quality of the physical plant or the teaching facilities and talent which determine the worth of any educational institution. Dartmouth's future is in your hands. Give today. Looking into the marital situation, we find that Walt Schubert and Miss Mary Elsbeth Bertolf of Greenwich, Conn., were married on February 21. After a trip to Nassau for their honeymoon, they are residing in Stamford, Conn. Mrs. Schubert is a graduate of Cornish School for Women.
In February, the engagement of Ray Richard to Miss Gloria Catherine Sepp of Jackson Heights, N. Y.. was announced. Ray is presently an ensign in the Navy, having been called back to active duty last June. He is aboard the V.S.S. Leyte. Miss Sepp attended the Art Students League and Queens College. Ray was with GE in Schenectady before his recall.
Another returnee to active duty, HowardHirshberg, became engaged in February. The lucky girl, Miss Louise Ginsberg of Newton Centre, Mass., is a Senior at Simmons College. Howard is an ensign but there is no notice of where he is based.
John Barry has been appointed as rehabilitation counselor for the Middlesex (Mass.) health association. John has a Master's degree in Psychology from Boston University and has given a course in personnel psychology at Harvard.
Anyone knowing the present whereabouts and occupation of Eddie Ouellette will please let us know. When last heard from Eddie was a New Hampshire restaurateur but a visitor's card from the Inn dated March 12 states his address as Boston.
At the Chicago Kickoff Dinner for the Alumni Fund which we were privileged to attend, we found that '4B was amply represented by Bill Pendill, Class Newsletter Editor Don Ryan, Johnny Fenno and myself. I'm willing to wager that our class had the highest number of any class represented. A real feat out in the wilds. At any rate, the food, drink and speeches were excellent and we were sorry we had to duck out a wee bit early to drive back to Niles.
We found out, though, that Bill is assistant to the supervisor of Outdoor Advertising in the Media Department of Leo Burnett Cos., a huckster emporium in Chicago. Don is still throwing fingers at the Chicago Board of Trade. Johnny and I are still trying to encourage the growth and sale of cultivated mushrooms.
Bill Pendill reported on a last fall excursion to Gotham and subsequent trek to Princeton for the notorious gridiron tussle there. With him went John Hatheway, a New York adman. He says that he runs into Ken Saunders and Jim Duffy in Chicago once in a while.
We hear that Mai Hill, not content with an A.B. and an M.C.S. is now in quest of an LL.B. at Cornell Law School. Dave Rogers, another Chicagoan, has recently purchased a house in the Northwest suburbs from his proceeds at Skilsaw, Inc.
Now having exhausted our sources, we sign off for this month. Thanks for helping out on the Alumni Fund.
