Howie Bemis was very much in the news this month, getting his picture in the Springfield, Mass., paper when he became a trustee of the Wesson Hospital, and through a stirring letter written to the same paper lambasting Massachusetts Tax Commissioner, he provided the subject of their lead editorial, "The Tea Party Spirit." There is not sufficient room to publish the entire letter, but it opens, "Where is the Boston Tea Party Spirit of our ancestors who refused to pay to the English a tax on tea? This spirit must be dead when we allow Henry Long and his men to harass citizens of this state, to cause their names to appear in headlines, to imply they are criminals because they bought some liquor and cigarettes in a neighboring state." Then he goes on, "If Mr. Long is upheld by the courts, then we should begin a campaign of civil disobedience. Massachusetts needs a Gandhi." And he ends up, "If all else fails, let's dump Mr. Long and his agents in Boston Harbor." Good, Eh?
