You're really making it tough this month, not a single solitary letter, but fortunately I've got a tew well planted spies and inside the Main Gate at West Point too. The short story, complete on one page, is a standard fixture of almost any fiction magazine, but this is a story complete in one line and to get it we had to go to the classified ad column of Pointer View for November 10, 1950. This is the newspaper published at the United States Military Academy. Under items for sale we find, "Maternity dresses Call WP3268. Mr. Timbers." This ad was inserted the day after the birth of Bob Timbers' fourth child. I don't know whether there is any significance between the juxtaposition of Bob's ad and the one immediately above it in the same column which read, "Shotgun, Winchester pump Model 12. Call Maj. Smith." Or if you need a car you can buy a '42 Ford with a '48 motor and a '49 paint job, or if you like dogs, answer this one, "What do you get when a beautiful Cocker Spaniel mates with a terrier? We have them (8 of them) for sale 6 weeks old." So much for West Point and my short story.

I may be anticipating a little bit the Alumni Fund drive, but for those of you who plan your budgets ahead I would like to mention the obvious fact that Dartmouth's financial picture may become exceedingly serious this year due to probable lower enrollments and, therefore, in earned income. The problem of the privately supported educational institution and its survival in present circumstances is something that should concern everyone. President Dickey in his speeches to the alumni and the undergraduate body has not portrayed a very cheerful picture. So far it is only a guess, but there is the distinct possibility that enrollment may drop from 25 to 50%, and as yet no additional military personnel have been assigned to Hanover which would tend to offset this decrease. So in making your plans for the coming year, remember that Dartmouth's need will be greater this year than ever before.
We have a few address changes this month. Suggest you look through them, you might find a new neighbor.
