News has reached us that Mrs. Lena Breed Harris, widow of Dr. Thomas J. Harris, died on May 22, 1951, after a long illness. Their only daughter is Mrs. Elizabeth H. Barton, 20 Coolidge Hill Rd., Cambridge, Mass., whose husband Dr. Francis L. Barton is a Harvard professor. Mrs. Barton writes: "One of moth- er's greatest pleasures was to give to her great- nephew William Breed my father's fraternity pin when he was elected to Theta Delta Chi at Dartmouth two years ago." Mrs. Harris was an accomplished player of the cello. She and Tom made many outing trips to Europe.
Dr. Edgar B. Philbrook writes from his home in Los Angeles:
"Your (Christmas*) letter carried me back to my days at Dartmouth arid their varied associa- tions. We were young men then, filled with ideals, ambition and confidence. Now that fu- ture toward which we looked is but a memory. What a multitude of unforeseen experiences we have had. What a revelation has been unfolded to us along the way. To have lived is a gift of supreme significance. Generally speaking, I am in very good health. But like Dr. Ross, my legs are the weakest part. Better the legs than the head!
A good letter just received from Dr. NedRoss (Mrs. Ross acting as secretary) says:
"Mrs Ross and I are fairly well for our ages, 85 and 87. I am able to wait on myself and walk short distances. Mrs. Ross has been quite active until she sprained her ankle two weeks ago. Our son Ralph has recently been advanced to the posi- tion of plant operating engineer in the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. His office is in New York and his residence in Summit, N. J. His four daughters are married and have families of. their own, giving us, now, ten grand- children. Jonathan, his only son, is in the Army and is now in Germany. As. you know, our daugh- ter Helen ' and her husband Stephen Chase of Hanover spend the winter, in their home in Dune- din, Fla., where they own a citrus grove and raise large numbers of gladioli. Helen and Ralph both have summer homes in Danville, Vt., seven miles from St. Johnsbury."
Billie Newton and the secretary expect to send out another letter shortly, emphasizing the appropriateness of Memorial Day as a time to make gifts to the College—bequests and contributions as gifts and memorials to the 1952 Alumni Fund. Memorial gifts to the Alumni Fund have filled a significant place in 'B6's history.
