Last month, when we had a minute to chat with Dan Schwartz, we picked up a bit of evidence that demonstrates there's nothing wrong with the real estate business in the New York suburbs. According to Dan, commuter Frank Kappler recently bought himself a new address in Ardsley and it was ditto for Church Sims in Scarsdale. In addition we got some interesting side lights into Dang Scherman's private life. Rosemary and new son John complete the household Scherman and we learn that the ace of the lens has turned auto mechanic, a necessity since toting home from across, a Mercedes which occasionally flips a piston.
Residents of Lincoln Park West in Chicago were sorry to lose their good neighbors, the five Frank Nairnes, but "Pop," who is Sales Engineer for Gustin-Bacon Company, has moved his headquarters to Minneapolis and quite naturally wanted the gang to go along too A little self-criticism for having been "derelict in his obligations" caused Bob Lewis to contribute the following, which we pass along with considerable pleasure:
"At the end of the school year last June, I gave up the principalship of Conant High School, East Jaffrey, N. H., to become the Superintendent of the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, N. H. The Cathedral was begun in 1945 as a simple family memorial to Lt. Sanderson Sloane '39. Because of widespread spontaneous acceptance of its representation of fundamental spiritual and social values, it has come to be a memorial to all who have served America and given their lives in her defense, and a place of worship for all people, officially recognized by 31 different religious denominations, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish, all of which hold services here."
The exodus of textile operations from New England is a matter of great concern in these parts. At a recent meeting in Boston, sponsored by the Industrial Development Committee of the New England Council for the purpose of aiding areas caught in the textile slump, Mike Tenlon had a lot of sound advice for the gathered body. As co-director of the State Planning and Development Board for New Hampshire, Mike has had to deal with the identical problem for some years and, as reported several columns back, has done an outstanding piece of work for the Granite State.... It's a matter of some years since we last had a posting on Chape Leinbach who, based on present information, must be right busy doing public relations for Air Transport Association in Washington.
For years the urge to "go it alone," coupled with the confidence that comes from accomplishment, have told him to do it... and on April 1 he did... we refer to the establishment of the firm called Albert L. Gibney and Associates, Inc., by the man of the same name. This means A 1 now has his own advertising agency in Springfield, Mass., and we go out on no limb to prophesy that other similar establishments in the environs will have to get up early to beat Gib.
The column refuses to take sides on the relative merits of the two branches of service. However, we are sure that the boys at the Naval Hospital at Annapolis are getting firstclass care if they're patients of Dr. DanaGoldthwaite ... likewise we know Major JoeSchaeffer's charges are completely satisfied with his doctorship out at Wichita Falls, Tex. ... While on the military, be it known that Lt. Col. Frank Curtis is now reachable through the post office at Overland Park, Kans... .
Captain Joe Davis, whom we practically had back in the States last month, writes that he's moving, but to another location in Japan. Says Joe: "Scarce items in Tokyo include other '36ers, but there are about a dozen Japanese and American active Dartmouthers at the Club Meeting each month."
We won't attempt to guess the duties of Washington's Barry Sullivan, but we did see a guy who knew a doll who had a brother that knows that Barry works for a Connecticut Avenue firm, Walker and Crenshaw... .
There's evidence to indicate that Sev Vass is still planning finances for the Ford family and their motor interests in Dearborn.... The mail from Canada points out a spectacular opportunity to turn a fast buck in oil. Perhaps Bill Davis, out in Bartlesville, Okla., is better equipped to advise the investor; Bill answers to the description of an oil producer which, in our mind, must be the next best thing to night janitor at Fort Knox... .
Remember, don't wait 'til the last minute on that check for the Alumni Fund ... write it now!
