A BEAUTIFUL, warm, almost rainless spring, the like of which Hanover hasn't seen for some years, has permitted virtually all contests to go on as scheduled, so there has been action aplenty the past month.
Two new coaches were added by the DCAC during the past month when Robert L. Clotworthy of Westfield, N. J., Olympic three-meter springboard diving champion, was appointed instructor in physical education and assistant varsity swimming coach; and Peter Van Wyck Gardner, assistant crew coach at Princeton, was named instructor in physical education and head coach for the Dartmouth Rowing Club. Clotworthy, a former champion diver at Ohio State, will assist Tuss McLaughry in the physical education department and help Coach Karl Michael with the Dartmouth diving squad. Gardner was captain of the 1949 Princeton varsity crew and rowed number six for the Tigers for three years. He was a teammate of the present coach, Thaddeus Seymour, in 1947 and 1948.
On the varsity level, the Big Green baseball team has won ten games and lost eight, with two games to go. The lacrosse team has five wins against six losses, with one contest left; the golfers show nine wins, two defeats and one match to go; and the tennis team has an eight-six record with one match left. The varsity track team split four dual meets, and wound up the season by finishing 6th in the outdoor Heptagonals. Varsity team totals show 33 wins against 25 defeats.
On the freshman front, Eddie Jeremiah's baseball team has the best record to date with seven wins against only one defeat. The golf team has a 3-2 record, while the '60 lacrosse team has won two and lost three, the tennis team has a 3-4 record, and the track team has won three dual meets and lost only one. Freshman team totals to date are 18 wins and 11 defeats. Combined totals for all Dartmouth spring teams show 51 victories and 36 losses - a very good record for the 1957 season.
