The Class of '87 for many years has had four to six members attending Dartmouth Commencements to "reune" together and share memories of college days.
Four years ago our well-known U.S. Senior Appeal Judge George Bingham dropped out by death at 85; then last year our popular Valedictorian, Dan Hadlock, was suddenly taken at 89; a few months later (March 30, 1953) our renowned and beloved Class leader, Fred Howland, yielded life to death at 89. Friends of '87 may well ask, "Who is left to 'reune' for '87?" The answer is, "For the present, just Sanborn and Gage." (see cut.) We are merely two Chandler scientific grads. Gage was valedictorian and I followed him by a decimal point. Ever since college days and even in high school we have kept in close touch with one another - for 72 years, from Newburyport High School through Dartmouth, graduating as engineers. There were too many distinguished members in '87 for us to be much heard of. It is only because our leaders have passed on and other class members have become disabled that we stand today, Sanborn as Class Secretary-Treasurer, Gage as our new, capable Class Agent.
Dartmouth officials must have realized that we were both 88 years old; they gave us seats way up-front where Gage could see and I could hear President Eisenhower and other speakers. It was a wonderful Commencement, presented in front of Baker Library, with 10,000 guests seated in chairs facing the speaker's rostrum on the Old Campus of our day.
