The news of the death of Fred A. Howland on March 30 has been received with deep regret by his classmates and many friends. One of the most outstanding members of the alumni body, he served as Trustee of the College from 1922 until 1932 and as Emeritus Trustee until his death. He was a member of the Alumni Council for six years, from 1913 until 1919. Dartmouth conferred upon him the LL.D. degree in 1933 and he was awarded the same honor by MiddJebury College and the University of Vermont.
Associated with the National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier, Vt., since 1903, Fred was made president in 1916. He became Chairman of the Board in 1937, a position he held until his retirement at the age of 85. In his home state of Vermont, he had a noteworthy record of achievement in civic and government affairs. The Class of 1887 conveys to Fred's four daughters its great sympathy in their loss. A more complete account of his life and active career appears in In Memoriam.
