One day last April a member of the executive committee of our Class phoned to ask if I'd accept the nomination of secretary for five years. The shock was so great I accepted since all the responsibilities outlined were in the distant future. The future is now at hand. Before getting into the news items, I would like to thank the Class for having elected me to this office and I hope that I can live up to the high standards set by Bibs Bankhart and his predecessors. I appreciate the honor bestowed.
Reunion news was excellently covered by Bibs but one item in his report will be of general interest and might be amplified. The duties of secretary and chairman have been split for the first time. The secretary continues with the principal duty of carrying on correspondence with the Class and the writing of class notes for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. (All items newsworthy or otherwise will be gratefully received and acknowledged in due course.) The chairman, Wayne Ballantyne, assumes the role of presiding officer of the executive committee which formulates general policy of the Class during the next five years and appoints all committees for the next succeeding reunion.
The first item of interest that comes to hand is the election of Carl Ray to president of the Dartmouth Club of New York. We also note Carl was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of the Office Equipment Manufacturers Institute.
Gib Reynolds writes that he was unable to get back to reunion because he splurged and took a three weeks' vacation in Florida.
The Louis Valiers had a daughter, Katherine Burr, on July 31. Speaking of daughters, Rem and Steve Butler drove down to New York with their three daughters to see Steve's father, Aubrey Butler '11, off on the QueenMary, after which we all got together for lunch and compared notes since neither Steve nor I could get to reunion.
Harry Schultz was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Harvard University this past June.... Commander Whitey Fuller has just returned to the U. S. after a nine-month tour of duty with Navy Task Force 77 in the Korean area. He was attached to the staff of Rear Admiral Robert F. Hickey, Commander Carrier Division 5 aboard the carrier USS Oriskany. Major John T. Merrill will participate in the Army's fifth annual logistical support maneuver at Camp Pickett where two thousand Army, Navy and Air Force officers will perform all functions necessary to provide a half-million man combat army with all needs.
Em Brightman has recently been appointed general manager of merchandising by the Grand Union Cos. Sterling Atwater has been made manager of production and marketing in New England for Handy & Harmon.
A few weeks ago I bumped into Bob Crabb in a steak house and found that he gets on here from Seattle once every month or two. How about giving us a ring, Bob, next time you get to NYC? This is all the news that was left over from reunion, thanks for bearing with me, only wish I'd had an English major.
