The Big Green's most recent 5 to 3 victory over Princeton has kept Dartmouth right in the thick of contention for the E.I.L.B. championship along with Army, Navy and Cornell. The Indians face two of these teams (Army and Cornell) during the next ten days and can win or lose on the outcome of these crucial games. Since last month's report, Dartmouth has won seven and lost four, but two of the losses were to non-league opponents. The Big Green topped Holy Cross 9-3, St. Michael's 5-1, and Brandeis 4-3, before dropping a league game to Navy by a 6-2 score. Williams defeated Dartmouth 12-9 and Vermont upset the Big Green 5-4 for the only other defeats, while the Big Green won over Yale 13-3, Harvard 6-4, Brown 1-0, and Princeton 5-3, for four important league victories.
Coach Tony Lupien's team has improved markedly both in the field and at bat during the past month. Although only one player, second baseman Roger McArt, is hitting at a .300 clip, the Big Green has been coming through with timely hits. Outfielders Roger Hanlon, Dick Marrone and John King are all in the .250 to .880 hitting range, with catcher Woody Woodruff, shortstop Chuck Kaufman and Dave Richards batting at .225 or so. The team batting average is a respectable .210.
The Big Green mound staff, led by dependable Art Quirk, has also developed well. Quirk has carried the brunt of the load, hurling in eight games, and winning five of these. Don O'Neill, another veteran, has pitched three games, winning two and losing one. Stan Drazen, the third veteran, has had rougher going, being credited with four losses and no wins. Quirk has an earned-run average of 2.17, while Drazen has 3.38 and O'Neill 4.05. Dan Gordon, Roger Schaefer, Roger Hanlon and Ed Toothaker have seen limited action on the mound, averaging four innings of work each.
Coach Lupien is pleased with the way his Indians have come along this spring. The "heads up" type of ball they are playing is bringing out large crowds to Memorial Field, and Lupien feels that the team spirit and ability could well bring the league title to Hanover.
