Elsewhere on these pages the coach of the Big Green heavyweight crews, Pete Gardner, describes the arduous (and sometimes perilous) practice sessions of the Dartmouth Rowing Club crews. Unfortunately, the heavyweight oarsmen suffered their first defeat of the season here on April 16 as a stronger-than-usual Brown crew beat the Indians by two lengths on the Connecticut River to win the Atlanta Cup. Dartmouth's JV crew defeated the Bruins, as did the second freshman boat, but the first freshman boat lost. Three of the four winning times were new records for Dartmouth-Brown competition although not for the Connecticut River course.

Dartmouth's lightweight crews, who open on the 23rd, are rated by Coach Hartwell Perry as very strong, with a large nucleus of lettermen back. Ken Taber is captain and stroke, with Dave Hambleton, John Wheaton, Tom Russell, Bill Farrens, Ira Salafsky, Butch Small and Bill O'Keefe the other members of the first boat.
