This copy is being prepared before the November issue is out. I, therefore, have received no comments one way or the other as to my digging into the past. Lacking comments I continue with two items.
1. Statistical: A recent check of our class roster of 164 reveals that of the youngest here who entered Dartmouth with 1900, fourteen were born in 1879 and three in 1880. Of the fourteen, six are living. Our youngest member was born in May 1880.
2. Gone to Florida: As a matter of economy in printing, I am considering listing the names of those of us who are not going. Final decision having not been reached, I report the Pete Fletchers have already gone to Winter Park.
Reverting to 1897. In the issue of March 12 under "Locals" appeared these widely scattered notes: "Mrs. Benjamni F. Prescott of Concord has been the guest of Prescott 'OO." "Prescott 'OO has been confined to his room by illness the past week." "Mrs. Prescott of Epping was in town this week visiting her son, Prescott 'OO, who is sick with the measles." In the issue of March 19 is this item: "Prescott 'OO has recovered from an attack of the measles." It began to look as though Ben had hired a press agent.
The annual Hanover concert of combined Glee and Mandolin clubs listed the following 1900 members: Boyle, Brooks, Christy, Conner, Gilson, Howard, Keyes, Morse and Virgin.
March 26: "Baker '00 is to sing 'The Holy City' at the Vesper service in Rollins Chapel Sunday evening." As I recall it any singer who made any pretensions, as well as those who did not, had this particular song in his repertoire. Not being a singer, I can't be too sure but as I recall it, this narrates a dream version of a visit to old Jerusalem, and a vision of the crucifixion and a final burst of hosannahs. This condescending criticism appears in the next Dartmouth: "The interest in Sunday evening chapel is very much increased by a solo by one of our best singers. The selection by Mr. Baker '00 last Sunday evening was well rendered and with a little more practice in the choir and confidence in his ability, Mr. Baker could do himself full justice." And that to the man who probably had the best trained voice in college that year! Percy left at the end of freshman year and became a professional singer.
Apropos of faculty "At Home" nights, ap- pears this semi-querulous note: "If all the faculty would choose someone night, either Thursday or Tuesday, then students would be greatly convenienced." I recall quite clearly a remark made one morning after one of these "At Home" nights. Some of our classmates appeared at Prof. George Lord's home at an early hour and stuck it out due probably to not knowing how to leave. He said that perhaps it would not be amiss to call to the attention of those of us who had perhaps lacked experience in the social amenities, that two short calls were better than one long one. There's one thing I learned in college which has stayed with me through life thus far.
