Short rations this month on account of publishing names of contributors to the Alumni Fund. The high spots will be hit and that will, be that.

Known '09 visitors to Hanover this fall are Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burroughs, Westboro, Mass. Harry wrote me in August that he expected to visit his sister in Stowe, Vt., and take in Hanover. The property of neither him nor his son, Jack, was touched by the big blow in Massachusetts last summer. Other visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wing, South Dartmouth, Mass., Dr. and Mrs. Bill Holzer, Worcester, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. BenDudley, Rochester, N. Y. Bill and Ben are perennial blooms in Hanover. It doesn t seem almost two years since Ben retired. That's how time scampers.

My old friend, Charlie Truman, retired official steamfitter of Dartmouth college, had a man-sized writeup in the Valley News of October 20. It showed a pix of him holding onto a banjo. The article, which appeared under a three-column head, outlined Charlie's history from the time he was a kid and on through his fifty years in Hanover. In his early days he was a jockey. It's a good thing he isn't attempting a comeback like Earl Sande. A race horse would be mighty unhappy carrying Charlie's 235 pounds.

Our sympathy goes to Hal Foreman, whose wife, Florence, died on October 17. She was a swell person, interested for years in Chicago philanthropic organizations, and had been a noted golfer. Besides Hal, she leaves two sons. It's a tough deal to have an association of so many years broken up. May Hal be given added strength to come through. Thanks to Nut Root for sending me the clipping from the Chicago Tribune.

It's a credit to Inge Fearing that he's still with the U. S. Dept. of Commerce in Boston which has been cut down from seventy to eleven men, according to my friend, Johnnie Shambow '10, who says, "Inge is dignifying the local crew with his superior ability, thus confirming his expertness in advising Boston market surveyors."

Classmate Walt Foster, who was with us for two years, has joined the Boston firm of Phillips, Cox & Wood, as counsel Al Hill has returned from summering in Maine to his winter quarters in West Hartford, Conn.

An old friend of mine, Gus Hallberg, Cornell '09, was motoring in the East and stopped for the night at a motel in New Hope, Pa., where Russ Pettengill lives. Having known Pett when the latter was in Chicago, he called up his place, but Russ was out of town. Pettengill's wife insisted that they stop by at the old mill Russ bought and is remodeling. "She is charming," says Gus, "fortyish and pretty. They have quite a place and Russ is shaping it up nicely."

NEWS OF '09 WIDOWS

Thanks to Dot Chase, the spark-plug of '09 widows, these news items are possible. Mabel Avery has left the Whale Inn where she ran a gift shop for several years, was looking for something in Florida winters so's to have summers free to visit with her daughter Joan and the grandchildren. Mrs. FreddieMorawski was hoping to meet up with Mabel before returning to South America, but they missed connections.

May Carroll spent the summer in North Scituate with daughter Marion and family. "I was so interested in reading about the Society Circus," she writes. "Fred had a part in it and I had a lot of pictures . .. FreddieMorawski and his sister were in grammar school with me."

Leonie Erhard reports that her son Dick and his family will return next year from Japan where he is with Lederle Laboratories and American Cyanide, to enter their son in Exeter. Leonie lives in Pasadena near her married daughter. Elsie McCurdy has sold the old homestead in Wentworth and has a smaller house in Plymouth, N. H.

Laura Prescott has sold her home in Pelham Manor, is spending part of her time with her two sons, and traveling some. Lt. Col. Dana '37 has three kids and lives in Arlington, Va. Baxter '39 has three daughters and a son and lives in Charleston, W. Va. She misses the trips to Hanover, says Dot. Well, Laura, make a date for '55, when we'll have our so-called 45th, along with '10 and '11. Louise Hatch enjoyed the Dartmouth Glee Club when it came to Wilmington, Del. That's where Louise lives.

Merry Christmas, good people. May theNew Year bring you many good things.
