We are about to embark on another nine-month journey into the land of fact and fantasy complete with whipped cream and a cherry (not to mention nuts) so bear with me. After a long, hot summer, I must admit that I have received very few letters. Since my last column in June, I have received only three pieces of mail, and that together with the hearsay (it's admissable in this column, friends) are all the material I have.
For instance, a large and unruly crowd of '72s. '73s, and '74s were visible to the naked eye for varying periods of time at the wedding of Mike Onderick '73 in Milwaukee. Without boring you with the names of '73s like O'Shea and Tyler. I will tell you that I also ran into none other than Dan Cooperman, who spent the summer working for a bank in Chicago. He apparently got into the banking scene, because at the reception he managed to fend off a couple of anxious bridesmaids with his cigar, umbrella, and repetoire of Bee: Pong lines. They left, unfulfilled - God knows what hideous fate he saved us from. Coop will be returning to his duties as class president when he returns to Stanford Business School. I was also informed that Chip Carstensen will be commencing his studies at the University of Chicago Business School.
Mingin Philip Lo writes that he spent his vacation from Cal Tech, where he is in the Ph.D. program in environmental engineering science, working as an intern at the United Nations. He is helping with the preparations for the World Population Conference which is to be held in Bucharest, Romania next year. Phil also informed me of the whereabouts of other '72s like James Moy who is a student at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, enrolled in the three-year M.D. program. Po Hua Ng is at the University of Maryland working toward his Ph.D. in Physics, and a vicious rumor is circulating that he may be a married man. Phil Cohen is in Toronto at the University Med School and In-June Kim continues at Harvard Grad school of Economics. Phil Giosia is at Syracuse Med School and has recently passed the National Board. Phil remains true to his values and has spent free moments working in various Syracuse activist movements. It strikes me that Phil's zeal burns brighter than most of ours (angry young men). Many of us, myself included, became too easily disappointed with lack of quick success as a result of our protests and lost our enthusiasm. I am glad to see that apathy does not reign universally supreme, at least not with Phil. I am not advocating protest and dissent for the hell of it. HoWever, when faced with moral atrocity, protest becomes a necessity.
A note from Shel Prentice reads that he is touring Europe while on vacation from his job teaching U.S. History to American G.I.'s at Bad Kreuznach Ecucational Center in West Germany The card came from Florence, Italy, as he planned to tour through Switzerland before returning to classes.
I also got another thoughtful letter from BobWinterbottom. Bob is still working on ecologies projects for the Peace Corps in Upper Volta. He informs me that he has a great deal of time to himself and has formed a tentative game plan with Leopold (bird conservationist) as a head coach, and Thoreau as general manager. The word was not to print this, but I hope Bottom will forgive me for the following excerpt.
"I have reaffirmed my committment to conservation battles in the U.S. as well as my desire to redress the imbalances between richest/poorest - we, luxurious and frivolous; they: subsistence, suffering, and misery." There are too many "they" In this world. It may be easier to clearly formulate such a point of view in Upper Volta than it will be to remain true to it in America. Here's hoping you hang in there, Bottom.
Jim White will be at B.U. Law School when this is printed, as will John Fieldsteel, who joins the 3A Ridgemont crew, for better or worse. Bob King, whose life is in turmoil, has vaporized after a summer as a bouncer at the Hanover Inn Tavern Room with cohort Wayne Young. There goes one roomate! Dave Engle has also pulled out for a roomate who can cook, so on comes John to meet Ghort, face to face, (grind wheel?)
I would also like to make an appeal for some set well cards for Ghort who has had a couple of long stays in repair shops. Since your news makes him feel better by comparison, please include some with the note along with any steak bones or egg shells you might have lying around. Dig deep, everyone knows it's no fun to be in the hospital for the summer. His first problem was minor - an inflamed washer, but recently he was rushed to Mass General Repair Shop for an emergency silverwarectomy. He is now making satisfactory progress, but he needs your news to assure his speedy recovery! Next month, dudes ...
