On December 20, a near-record crowd of 223 alumni, applicants and their fathers turned out for the annual Christmas luncheon given in their honor. The luncheon was held at the Mid-Day Club atop the Union Commerce Building and it was engineered by BobMcMillan '40, Bill Duncan '40 and their committee. This luncheon is given annually by the Cleveland Alumni Association to better acquaint Dartmouth applicants and their fathers with the College and its activities, and at the same time give the alumni a chance to meet the boys with their fathers. From both standpoints this luncheon has proved highly successful.

The principal speaker was Dean Joseph McDonald, who spoke on various college problems, including the drinking situation in Hanover, which he emphasized was a perennial problem among the colleges and one to which there was no easy solution. He also spoke of the little-publicized Dean's fund which he explained is a revolving fund which the Dean has available for making loans to deserving students. His talk was enlivened by interesting anecdotes involving students during his brief tenure of office.

Lou Weitz '35, president of the Club, welcomed the group and then turned the meeting over to Toastmaster Bill Steck '31. One interesting feature of the banquet was the talk by Red Flynn '29 and his son Jim, who is a member of the Class of '56. Red addressed the group on the importance of being a gentleman and Jim spoke on his experiences during his first three months in Hanover. Other speakers on the program included Ray Barker '23, alumni councilor, and Al Hutton '41, cochairman of the interviewing committee.

Although there was no record kept as to attendance by classes, more members of the Class of '40 seemed to be in evidence than any other class. However, on the whole, the alumni representation was good and it ranged from Cleveland's senior alumnus, Mort Kroll '01, to members of the Class of '56.
