After two December victories, 67-17 over McGill and 58-26 over Bowdoin, Coach Karl Michael's swimming squad has gone down to defeat twice in January to Eastern Swimming League opponents. The Green swimmers were vanquished by Harvard, 58-26, and then by Yale, 49-35.

Competing in the Harvard pool on January 10, the Indians saw the Crimson sweep nine first places in ten events. The only first place won by the Indians was in the 440-yard freestyle which Steve Mullins won in the fastest time of his competitive career 5:07.9. However, some of the races were very close affairs. In both the 50- and 100-yard events Dartmouth's John Glover was barely nosed out by Dave Hedberg of Harvard. An official's decision gave Hedberg the 50-yard race, while Captain Chuck Luker of Dartmouth encountered the same type of race in the 220-yard freestyle which he lost by the narrow margin of one stroke.

On the following Saturday the Yale swimming team coasted to their 89th straight victory in the Payne Whitney Pool in New Haven by a 49-35 score. Coach Bob Kiputh of Yale used his regulars sparingly in the meet with Dartmouth and kept the big three of Moore, McLane and Marshall completely under wraps. Despite this the Elis won seven of the ten events. Captain Chuck Luker of Dartmouth won the 820-yard freestyle in 2:18.7, Neil Bersch captured the backstroke event for the Big Green with a time of 2:22.5 for the 200-yard course, and the Dartmouth relay team of Luker, Elsbree, Heyn and Glover annexed the 400-yard relay race to give Dartmouth the remaining three events.
