Four of six Dartmouth varsity spring teams opened their schedules last month with spring vacation contests in the South. The baseball team had eleven games scheduled during March, while the tennis team met six opponents and the golf team four. The lacrosse team had one scheduled game and several practice games.

The Dartmouth Rowing Club crews worked out in the East during the vacation period as did the Big Green

track team. Both meet their first opponents in April.

Optimism was the keynote as the coaches looked over their squads during early March workouts in the Alumni Gymnasium cage. Baseball coach Tony Lupien has a good nucleus of veterans, some promising rookies and hopefully more power at the plate. A trio of veteran hurlers — Bob Van Dam, Don O'Neill and southpaw Dave French - could make the Indians tough to stop. Two sophomores - Barry Elson at shortstop and Mike Nyquist at third base - seem to have these berths pinned down, while Captain Jerry Foote, a standout batter, will play first base. Another sophomore and good hitter is Ernie Torres who will start in left field. Dick Marrone, Carl Jaeger and Bill Quirk seem the best prospects for the two remaining outfield spots. Jim Murar, a junior, and sophomore Ken Kvistad are expected to handle the catching chores.

Dartmouth's lacrosse fortunes also may be looking up as Alden H. "Whitey" Burnham takes his first turn at the coaching helm. Burnham has a veteran defensive unit in Captain Pete Sly, Ed Boies and Jake Gillespie. Dave McEachron's return from service should give added spark to the Big Green offense, with John Walters and Pat Walsh slated to play alongside him. A stout midfield composed of football star Al Rozycki, Terry Rogers and Fred Cook, and a promising sophomore Bruce Derry and football half-back Bill King round out the strong squad.

The prospects for tennis and golf are less clear at this writing. Coach Red Hoehn has two outstanding veterans in Captain Ron Pickett and Jim Biggs, but the other players are still battling for seedings. In golf Coach Tom Keane faces a major rebuilding year and no judgments can be made here until the squad has a chance to get out on the southern courses.

After a fine winter season the varsity track team moves outdoors and many of the same lads who did so well this winter will, of course, bolster Coach Ellie Noyes spring team. Upsets like those over Manhattan and Yale this winter seem unlikely, but the Big Green runners should have another fine season.

Read Ambler (front) and Tom Russell, both seniors, try out the new George E. Jewett Rowing Tank, located in the rear of the Fuller Boat House, while Coach Pete Gardner watchestheir form. The major donor for the tank was George Jewett Jr. '50, former oarsman fromLewiston, Idaho. Accommodating two rowers at a time, the tank will help the crew overcome a major opponent, weather, and will provide actual blade work in water.
