Elsewhere on this page freshman coach Earl Hamilton has given a general report on Dartmouth's freshman squad which to date has defeated Brown 8-0 and was edged by Holy Cross 12-7. Here we'll provide a quick rundown of the top candidates by position as they shape up after the two games played thus far.

At fullback, Jim Lemen, Dave Evans, Bob Van Dam and Bill Tragakis have all seen action, with Van Dam rated as one of the best punters on the squad.

At the quarterback post, Dennis Niewoehner and Dick Heraty, both highly rated prospects, have been injured, so. Tom King and Jim Wallquist have been, sharing the duties. Paul Brown and Mike O'Connell have also seen action. To date King has shown the best ability, while Wallquist is rated best on defense.

Some good-sized, hard-running halfbacks are welcome additions this fall. A quartet of speed merchants include Colin Harley, Dick Stillman, Tom Cranna and Tom Boudreau. Vern Simms, Gary Spiess, Von Beebe, and Carl Funke are other promising halfbacks.

The Dartmouth freshman line is also well manned. Dave Usher and Bob Lightcap, who suffered a knee injury against Holy Cross which will sideline him for the season, are the top ends, with John Mussman, Bob Vetrone, John Wilkinson and Paul Duncan as likely candidates. At tackle we find Ben Urban, a 6-foot, 255-pounder who does the place kicking and kick-offs. Dick Centracchio and Jim Murar are two other strong right tackles. At left tackle are Dick Hoffman, Andy Zigelis and Jim Hale. Dick Couturier, Don Samuelson, Bill Sadd and Walt Grudi are at left guard with John Hust, Dick Lepeska and Newt Gardner battling for a starting berth at right guard. Three top-rated center candidates are Charles Hegeman, Carter Strickland (brother of varsity end Seth Strickland), and Bill Quay.
